My hard working writing staff is running out of new material to throw at the candidates.

Why would folks go after Newt since he's falling?

Wouldn't they go after Mitt and Paul, both of whom are showing a surge?

Au contraire mon frère. Haven't you noticed the Republican impulse to beat dead horses and kick men while they're down? It pains me, but it's just the way the Party works.

When Gingrich was down I thought he should be up, but now I have Steyn, Krauthammer ,Coulter,Will and a host of others telling me he's not the One. Looks like this non-voter will be rooting for Mr Inevitable after all.

A pox on professional pundits - they live on persuasion, not results. I'll support Gingrich until Glenn Beck actually comes up with a picture of him in a Che t-shirt.

a: Santorum was going after Bachmann recently for being unelectable. I thought that was pretty funny.

b: Newt's lead has shrunk, but he's still in the lead. He's still the easy favorite to win Florida, the only winner takes all race in the early primaries, and he should dominate South Carolina.

c: Of course they'll go after Mitt, and they'll go after Paul.

In every Republican debate for years, Paul has spent time been the uniting bogeyman figure that others get to look good in comparison to. Everyone wants to be the guy who gets compared.

Mitt will be a target because Perry and Huntsman are grouchy about him, Newt's target is obvious, Santorum shoots at random, and Bachmann's Newt Romney schtick works for her.

Frank Luntz said it was Romney's best debate ever.  I thought it was rock solid.  I liked his answer on being pro-life.  That's satisfied me.

Newt was great... after he got over the Fannie and Freddie thing.  The judges stuff was compelling.  He won me over on the issue.

I'm still listening to the panel on the Fox News Feed with Pat Caddell, Doug Schoen, and . . . whoever that other guy is. They all declared Newt the winner and gave him high marks, saying he had only one bad moment. They were less enthused about Mitt Romney's performance, but still didn't think he did that bad.

And they all agreed that Jon Huntsman is a joke.

This panel discussion is pretty interesting. They figure it's a three-man race now: Newt, Mitt, Ron Paul. Nobody else.

And after Florida, Ron Paul will be out.

They also think that if Mitt wins Iowa and New Hampshire, "the race is over."

A strong debate for all of the front runners. Perhaps Romney's best. I loved his answer on future industries - "not for the government to decide".

The Fox panel thought Perry and Bachman were strong, but they didn't see it on TV. Perry did not come across well on TV.  Bachman was over the top with her attacks on Gingrich.

Look, Newt's clearly the best debater - at least for the base - but we are electing a president, not a debater-in-chief.  Romney's no slouch, either.

My concern is that the red meat that Newt serves to the faithful may not go over well with the squishy middle.

I'm surprised that Romney is ahead in Iowa.  Newt's gotta win there or he'll fad fast.

I think Romney may be our best choice.  With a Republican majority, I think he could lead a real swing back to the conservative center of this country.

Barfly (#9) with respect, the people I named above are more than just professional pundits; they are major players in the conservative movement who have the good fortune to earn a living doing something they clearly believe in and relish. My point is that I was, and in many ways remain, well-disposed towards Gingrich and would love to see him debating Obama in the General Election. But there is no way I am going to dismiss the views of the likes of CHARLES Krauthammer and MARK Steyn who between them played such an important role in teaching me about American Conservatism that I named myself in honour of them. If they think Romney has the best chance of unseating Obama and is sufficiently conservative now, whatever about his past, then I'm well on the way to being persuaded. In fairness to Steyn I think he may not have got quite that far with Romney although he clearly doesn't want Newt but enough other opinion-shapers are on board to persuade me as things stand.

That woman has no sense of proportion and a tin ear to boot. She was my initial big disappointment in this race, followed by Perry.

Best debate yet, I thought. Gingrich was brilliant when on friendly ground, and irritatingly insistent when confronted with his mistakes. Romney was solid on his turf, business, but overly practiced and scripted, not inspiring trust. Bachman was passionately moral and patriotic, a little erratic, and without sufficient depth. Santorum was generally sufficient; he'd make an acceptable president in normal times. Huntsman's fluency on the far east threw his broader ignorance into sharp relief. Ron Paul showed himself a crank, and gave us a glimpse into that angry little mind.

That's the field in a nutshell, and every one of them put their real presidential self on display last night.

It was all due to the skill of the moderators. Thank you Bret, Megyn, Neil, and especially Chris. The questioning was timely, intelligent, respectful, and persistent, and then they gave the candidates just enough space to run. No beating people to fit some agenda, and no free passes either. This debate was both a crucible and a showcase. This panel did their job well and honorably.

And I guess that makes Perry something of a nonentity. I forgot he was even there.
