Media's Coverage of Kim Jong Il's Death
It's approximately 7:50 Pacific time, and I've just learned of Kim Jong Il's death. Here's how various outlets are covering, or not covering, the story. Fox News, CNN, and Bloomberg News are devoting their entire shows to Kim's death. MSNBC is showing a taped show, "Video Vigilantes." CBS is airing a story about Meryl Streep on 60 Minutes. NBC is showing an NFL game. ABC is showing America's Funniest Home Videos. As best I can determine, none of the latter outlets have broken the news yet. Oh wait, at approximately 7:57 MSNBC broke into the normal program to report the death. That report took about 30 seconds. It quickly returned to Video Vigilantes.

Re: Media's Coverage of Kim Jong Il's Death
Some of the more irreverent obituaries note that the "world's greatest golfer" died today. Apparently, on Kim Jong Il's first (and last) golf outing in 1994, he shot 38-under-par with several holes-in-one. It's just a matter of quickly doing lots of complicated physics calculations in one's head--simple for a monumental genius like Kim.

His obits read like a series of Chuck Norris jokes, with a little Mao and Stalin thrown in. I ended up burning my Kranz Kuchen while checking the news of his death online. To MSNBC's credit, I'm sure they would have done the same if someone of minor importance like, say, Michael Jackson died, right?

Clearly what Obama is doing is going for a world record.

Frankly, I think today's NFL games merited more national attention than the death of another despot with yet another 'back-up' in the wings. See: "Arab Spring."

I happens that on my TV, Fox and Aljazeera are side-by-side. The Aljazeera coverage was unquestionably superior: more extensive and better interviews.
