Algerian Islamists were nearly lynched when they tried to join Algerian youths rioting against inflation.

I can't find that story in English anywhere.  The riots have been reported, but nothing about this particular killing.  Also Claire, out of curiosity what languages do you speak?

Nearly lynched, not lynched. The point is that the Islamists tried to get into the rioting action and the rioters did not welcome their fellowship, to say the least--they were yelling at them, "The 90s are over!"

I speak French and English and I mangle Turkish horribly.

I'm commenting from my phone, so apologies in advance for any odd spacing or syntax... Algeria really is the epicenter of the struggle for the future of Islam. It's both a prime recruiting ground for the Islamists, and a perfect example of ordinary, decent moderate Muslims of faith pushing back hard against this. I was in Algeria a few years ago, and everywhere I went, ordinary Algerians told me how worried they were about the future of their country. Who knows, though, how long they'll hold out?

Do I remember correctly that Algeria, somewhat like Turkey, has a strongly secular Army, or at least one strongly opposed to militant Islam-ism?  I expect that it is a matter of the military's not wanting any counter-weight to its power, but if my memory faileth not, the military supplies a determined opposing power base in that country. There also may be some carry over from the French influence favoring a secular government.

Claire's story has a weird Camus vibe to it.

I wonder what Alistair Horne would have to say about this.

It is so pleasing to me when someone gets my little jokes.

I've called off the gnawing of your Blue Yeti USB cord by your pets as I've gotten over the fact that you beat me to the WSJ Chinese mom post by 4 hours. I consider this post a partial comeback. And, of course, I remain a shameless fan boy.
