Received this email a few moments ago from a friend of mine who's overnighting not too far from 1600 Pennsylania Avenue . . .

"Am one block from the White House tonight ... I think every Democrat staffer in town is outside trying to start a parade."

All kidding aside, what a terrific night to be an American.

Couple of thoughts on the announcement:

1) I thought the President's remarks were spot-on. To be able to tell the American people that you received the intelligence, ok'd the plan, and you got the bad guy without the loss of any American servicemen is powerful stuff. The one demerit: the "shortly after I took office" language. Must every Obama speech take a cheap shot at the previous administration as inept/unengaged?

2) The election is still 18 months away. A lot can change between then and now -- beginning with what happens on the streets of Pakistan in the next few days.

3) How relieved do you think Obama is that we didn't capture UBL alive? Whatever would we have done with him? A Manhattan trial? Gloria Allred taking up his defense?

4) What's the next appropriate step for the President? My choice: travel to somewhere near Ground Zero and have a group hug with the widows and orphans of 9/11. It's the least we can do for their near-decade of suffering, at the hands of this now-deceased mad man.

You thought his comments "spot on?"  Can't agree with you there, Brother Bill, as I noted in the post I put up just as you were putting up yours.

I'll sleep on it, then check in with you again tomorrow.  Either I'll recant--or come after you, growling.

But it sure is good to have Mr. bin Laden removed from the biosphere.  That's tonight's news.  We can deal with the details tomorrow.

A great night to be an American indeed!

Bill Whalen: 4) What's the next appropriate step for the President?

Take a long and hard look at his own preconceived notions about the priorities of the government, especially as it pertains to national defense.

What ought to be next is the revival of the US economy. Should be trivial for The Man Who Shot Osama Bin Laden.

The celebrations outside the White House reminded me of the celebrations I saw on 9/11 when Palestinians saw the images of the twin towers on fire and collapsing. I hope they broadcast that image on Al Jazeera all over the middle east so people can see that Americans celebrate at the news of justice being brought to cowardly murderers using women as shields.

There is still the disposal of the body to deal with.  The Brits had it right when they buried Moslem terrorists wrapped in pigskin.

Wherever the body ends up, it must be done in a way that precludes a trade for hostages.  I suppose that means cremation.  With the pigskin.

Too many "I's" in that part of the speech dealing with the information, the plan and the authorization. How much approval does one need for an operation that has been on going for ten years?

Yeah, the "Obama did in 2 years what Bush couldn't in 7" theme is already chapping me.

Obama approved the operation and it sounds like it went off w/o a hitch: Bin Laden dead, no American casualties.  That's what matters, not the press conference.  He could come out, do a little jig, say "I'm super keen!" and ask for donations for his reelection campaign for all I care.  We got Bin Laden!

Yeah...ok.

I fear Al Queda must have had a contingency for OBL demise, there may be a few believers willing to follow such plans, they are terrorists after all. I watched part of Mission Impossible (I'm not sure if it was 1 or 2); are "we" sharp enough to have in our possession a living speaking OBL? Didn't James Bond survive a burial at sea? Even if everything reported is true, I'm glad the ending keeps us guessing.
