Toto released "99" in 1979, the year before McLuhan died.

I think if McLuhan were around today, he'd be fascinated by hip hop culture. It exists everywhere in the world now, with Japanese or Danish kids rapping in slang that has zero relevance to where they live. All they know is, it looks and sounds cool in the videos.

FYI, from what I gather, (via Douglas Coupland's recent biography, etc.) he was a deeply, even if quietly, Christian man, attending mass weekly.
