So it turns out that the release of President Obama's birth certificate really did change things. I'd thought that nobody's mind would be changed by that release, but it turns out I was quite wrong. From the Washington Post:

The number of Americans saying President Obama was born in another country has been sliced in half, according to a new Washington Post poll.

In interviews following the public release the president’s “long-form” birth certificate last week, fully 70 percent of Americans say Obama was born in Hawaii, a big bump-up from the 48 percent who said so a year ago. Even more say he was U.S.-born, or call that their best guess, for a total of 86 percent.

Maybe this explains why the U.S. Govt. wanted to see my original (not pdf) U.K. long form birth certificate when I applied for Citizenship - they wouldn't take my word for it, and I didn't spend three years whining about it, and mocking them, before finally coming up with it, then mocking them even more.

I'm reminded of an occasion a few years ago when I applied for a Security licence. I was required to produce a copy of my birth certificate, which I did only to be told the copy I produced was not acceptable. It was a certified photcopy of an actual journal entry but the half wit behind the counter didn't like it because it was too old. I had had it about 35 years during which a much fancier, though no more informative, format had been adopted. I know because I had to go to Hatches, Matches, and Dispatces and pay for another copy.

I certainly didn't consider myself a "birther."  I considered myself a wonderer of "Why is it a problem for the President of the United States to produce a simple document proving he is eligible for the presidency?"  It would have been a simple issue to just release the darned thing as soon as questions about it hit the press.  After all, kids have to produce their birth certificates to play little league baseball, and if an opposing team's coach questions a player's age, the coach had better be prepared to show a copy of the birth certificate of the player in question.
