A video of rioting thugs in London smashing the Tory Party headquarters:

I interviewed Margaret Thatcher's press secretary, Bernard Ingham, in 2007. Watching this, I thought of him. He understood his country well, don't you think?

Bernard Ingham: I don’t think people really understand the viciousness of the Left in this country. Okay, you may say that the Left is infinitely more vicious in France, where they riot at the drop of a hat and all that, but this lot are really nasty. They don’t, they don’t … they get young people to fight their battles, like over the Poll Tax or whatever. And what David Cameron simply doesn’t understand is that if he wins the next election, these people will come out of their holes in the ground and actively seek to sabotage the country. That, I think—

CB: What’s the source of that viciousness? Where does it come from?

Bernard Ingham: Well, I think, because we are a fairly intemperate lot. The British pride themselves on being a wonderfully even-tempered and decent people, but once they embrace a doctrine, they can become quite, quite extreme. And the Left, they’re a nasty bunch. And they’re a nasty, scheming bunch, too. So that is the first point about her. They would hate her guts, simply because they hang on the label “Tory.”

The Wisconsin union mobs were better behaved than this lot but who can guarantee they'll stay that way there and elsewhere as events unfold? The left can always point to its crazy fringes as reason alone to agree to its demands. And when the unionized police and media are part of the organized left, it is an optimist indeed who doesn't see the cards stacked against the rest of the country.

Essentially I see these people as a bunch of slaves.

Appropriately enough, as of late I've been reading Kenneth Minogue's The Servile Mind: How Democracy Erodes the Moral Life.

Hypothesis: The less control people feel they have over their own lives/destinies as individuals, the more they are likely to respond to their personal difficulties with collective violent action.

Observation: The more all aspects of society are directed bureaucratically by government, the less control people will feel they have over their own lives.

Interesting tactics by the Left in Great Britain. Interesting also that the Tories relied on the police.

In this country "Media Matters for America" recently announced a change in their policy toward Fox News. David Brock, the founder, said the organization is going from "containment" to "war" and "sabotage."

But don't worry, Ricochet. Once the American people understand through the media that the tactics of the Democrats are anti-democratic, Americans will be repulsed and support conservatives instead.

Just like the polls in Wisconsin turned against the unions after all those obnoxious Democrat/union demonstrations in Madison.

There's no need to fight fire with fire. We have the better arguments and we act civilly; therefore, we will win. There's no reason to get out on the streets or attack our enemies.

The only thing you prove with mob violence is that you're not capable of governing yourself.

The reporter says that the violence represents a small minority of the demonstration. I must be missing something. If I am in a demonstration that I believe is supposed to be peaceful, and it started turning violent, I would leave.

Apparently the police are afraid to round up and arrest this *minority* fearing they will incite more demonstrators.

Therefore, those who remain are supporting the violence by giving it cover.

This is the fruit of the British education system, eh? Maybe they need to review the curriculum a little before they head back to class.

I don't understand the police reaction. Are they so cowed by political correctness that they can no longer maintain peace? My concern is that we're seeing some of that attitude here - especially when the police are in charge of maintaining peace at a union protest (we saw some of that in Wisconsin). Very scary.

Significantly increasing hooliganism/violent crime + Ingham's description of the left + ultra PC policing = what we saw in London this weekend. A couple of weekends ago I was in the affected areas with my wife &  4 year old son.

This is the nation with an empire on which the sun never set a century ago. Those who think that our core values won't require defending, might want to reflect on that.

This is also the nation in the west whose debt is actually worse than ours with a very fragile recovery. This will not be the last of these episodes - but depend on the police to be unprepared/surprised almost without fail.

The police at such events face an impossible task.

If they clamp down on rioters firmly, they are accused of being heavy-handed, and by being so, of fomenting reactive violence.

If they merely resort to techniques of crowd control and dispersal, they are accused of being impotent and disorganized, when some splinter group breaks off and runs riot.

Overall, I often think they do as good a job as can be expected, squaring an impossible circle between political correctness and public protection.

David Horowitz has a wonderful comment on the inner cities of America: these are the only place here in America that the left-wing of the Dems have had absolute sway for decades. Their values and policies tend to create these types of problems with thugs and street violence -- these are European values. Except for the mono-cultural centers, Europe has the same results, too.

What's interesting is how much the Dems need to keep the cities like this so they can send thugs to Wisconsin and have rent-a-mobs for themselves. Community organizers are really community predators.

Obama made his living in Chicago on the backs of people with slave-type mentalities.

Cuba keeps their people in Cuba by shooting people in the backs as they try to leave. This sets an example for the rest. Chicago Dems keep their people in the city by always beating the racism drum and saying to those who would like to leave: "Abandon all hope all ye who leave. Whitey and Bubba hate you, they will not hire you and they will -- OMG the biggest horror -- disrespect you."

We think the left is wrong, while the left thinks we are bad. This generalization explains the nastiness gap.

If they are doing this, why don't the police shoot them?

What's causing anarchy on the streets of London? Could it be anarchists? Personally, I would ban face masks at all political rallies and protests and would penalise broadcasters who allow individuals airtime while hiding their identities or using false names. (Of course, none of the above would apply to Ricochet!).
