Looks like some poor Greeks will be limping wherever they go. According to this Daily Caller report, doctors in Greece will now amputate feet instead of prescribing special footwear to diabetes patients because it's cheaper.

Remember when Obama said this sort of thing wouldn't go on?

Hey! Let’s governmentalize health care in the US! What could possibly go wrong?

I know I read something similar to this in NEW YORK a few years ago. In that case it was education and medication that were too expensive. Does anyone else remember more about that?

Unfortunately, I am reminded of the old joke that ends with: "No need for amputate. It fall off anyway!"

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts, and wielding scalpels.

Where is the Greek shoe manufacturing lobby on this issue?

And the leftist elites still mock Sarah Palin for her Death Panel expose.

This is beyond stupid. The pennies they will save on diabetic footwear will be far exceeded by the costs of disability, prostheses, and future morbidity.

Such cost-cutting is inevitable. As the government offers the healthcare pro bono or artificially cheap, the quantity of healthcare demanded will rise rapidly. When that happens, the government must increase the quantity of healthcare supplied if its to avoid shortages. However, if it increases the quantity of healthcare supplied, costs of production will increase and the unprofitability of the endeavour will be broadened. Thus, avoiding shortages requires actions that involve incurring ever higher costs which in turn require certain cost cutting measures.

This issue is not new and not limited to Greece. Take a look at this article from 2006.
