Law Talk #5: The Price of Burritos
The Ricochet Law School faculty lounge re-opens this week as host Troy Senik guides Professors Epstein and Yoo through discussions ranging from the DOMA defense in turmoil, Boeing's union troubles, more budget battles, and the law suit that threatens the promise of affordable burritos for everyone. Also, don't miss Richard's spirited defense of Calvin Coolidge (he's running?), and his stern warning to Republicans who "make a big deal out of the social issues." Watch your back Rob Long, your reign as Ricochet's resident RINO may be in trouble.
Update: Here's a short clip of Richard making the case as to why Republicans ought to steer clear of social issues in the upcoming presidential elections:

Thank you, Pat. Your check is in the mail. I'm assuming I have your permission to cut and paste your comment into an E-mail to each of my ex-girlfriends?

Maybe we'll discuss a retainer agreement later. However, I'm not sure how far my word will go with the ladies.

I am going to have to listen. Personally, I think the social issues are the #1 problem facing this nation. Out-of-wedlock births is a growing trend that threatens this nation. If we cannot reverse that trend, if we cannot restore the family, we are in a lot of trouble.
I look forward to hearing the arguments.

Re: Law Talk #5: The Price of Burritos
I agree that the first and last words of any candidate should be about the economy and the debt. But as far as "calling a truce" on social issues.... no. There simply is no conservatism without social issues, and anyone that runs away from that doesn't get my support. I realize there's a real temptation out there right now to adopt a more socially liberal stance ('cuz all the cool kids say we should). But indeed, what does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul?
You cannot separate moral issues from fiscal issues. Because our fiscal failings are at their core, moral failings themselves.

Fantastic again, Troy! By far the best podcast at Ricochet; "Misty" was close in quality, but Mssrs. Long, Steyn, and Goldberg need to do four more just as good to even be able to rival this podcast. Keep up the great work=)

Re Epstein & Yoo's analysis of the NLRB's attack on Boeing: This is an issue that cannot be discussed too much. Even people with multiple degrees are instructing me that Boeing is in the wrong for seeking to escape predatory unions, which suggests that this is an issue about which there is much ignorance.
