Latest Ricochet Poll Results: Ron Santorich is Our Man!
Newt Gingrich takes a 41% to 34% lead over Mitt Romney in our latest poll (644 Ricochet Members responding; Jan. 22-24). In doing so, Gingrich rebounds from the tepid 15% he drew only 16 days earlier, picking up support from erstwhile supporters of Perry and Huntsman, along with defectors from the Rick Santorum camp. Notably, Romney's support dropped only three points, from 37% to 34%, during the same period.
When asked to select the candidates most aligned with their views on major policy categories, Members like Gingrich on foreign policy (47% selecting), Ron Paul on economics (36%), and Rick Santorum on social issues (43%). In contrast, there is little alignment with Santorum on economic policy (5%) or Ron Paul on foreign policy (5%). Romney is neither highest nor lowest in any of the three policy areas, polling toward the middle across the board.
Only 6% of you choose Ron Paul as the candidate you'd most want to be stuck with in a snowdrift -- despite him being a medical doctor who could treat you for frostbite and hypothermia. (Apparently, some things are scarier than the prospect of having a limb or two amputated.) Gingrich scores highest in this attempt to capture Likeability, followed by Santorum and Romney.
After all this, Romney still reigns as the most electable candidate. 84% of you describe him as such, compared with only 63% for Gingrich.

Perhaps you could have included Ann Coulter in the "stuck in the car" question.

Re: Latest Ricochet Poll Results: Ron Santorich is Our Man!
I don't think this is all quite the quantum theory you are making this out to be. It is clear that Conservative Republican Primary Voters prefer Gingrich to Romney. That is showing up massively in the polling in Florida. If Newt breaks Romney's neck in Florida, it's a whole new race. Why don't you stop trying to pick a winner and go back to issues that matter. Like stopping Obamacare and making the Supreme Court feel the heat from the Conservative side. Too much off track betting going on. Stop handicapping and start caring!

Re: Latest Ricochet Poll Results: Ron Santorich is Our Man!
I wonder. Can Ricochet polling track individual members and how they vote. Because here we have a grand opportunity to study how people think and select candidates. You see Santorum drop and see Gingrich rise and assume that people fled one and went to the other. Seems reasonable but it need not be true. What if they split but Mitt supporters also left him as well and went to Gingrich. It would look the same. If we could track it by member we could see how consistent any one candidates support is.
Re: Latest Ricochet Poll Results: Ron Santorich is Our Man!
To your point, it's important to track individuals over time to truly understand the shifts. With our current set up, we can't do this.
For all we really know, all of Gingrich, Santorum, and Perry's supporters could have switched to the Romney camp, and vice versa -- the numbers we see at the aggregate level would be the same as if they'd have stayed in place.
The same technique is used to show inter-class income mobility, by the way.

Egad James, I found the results quite interesting. The voters in Fla will pick their winner and we shall all opine. I think you would be hard pressed to find a more thoughtful group that really does care deeply about those issues you bring up. I have never sensed indifference to the larger issues but we do need to pick a champion from this crew of candidates. Someone must ride in to the valley of the shadow of death.

I wonder if you broke up the results according to gender, how many women would want to be stuck in a car with Newt. Especially after all the comparisons to Clinton.

Mrs. Mom, Newt is an amateur, Clinton is a professional. I don't think Clinton spent one full month of that marriage faithful to Hillary. Not only is he beneath contempt but she is a complete psychotic for taking it and not divorcing him.
Newt's not in their league.

Get over it. Newt's, strangely enough, a ladies' man. A lot of charismatic men are. All candidates have weaknesses.

Prediction: Newt will try to decapitate Romney in the next debate.

I didn't say I wouldn't consider voting for him because of his flaws. I just said I wouldn't like to be stuck in a car with him. (I love his views on Israel!) His character troubles me, though. Eenie--meenie-miney-moe, pick the pol who'll vanquish O.

I'm surprised that Gingrich won the car question.
I'd imagine he'd be lecturing me endlessly about getting the car stuck in the snow.
I assume I was driving...

The guy asked for an open marriage and then married his mistress. He didn't go around groping stewardesses and cocktail waitresses. I think the women would be safe in a car with him.

Nice graph, but considering only Gingrich and Ronmey, visualize what a linear regression, so far, would look like for both of them.

This from a champion creator of crowds! When I consider the Soros-arranged crowd that Obama brought with him, I want to call the Orkin Man.

What the not-Mitt voters really need in the poll is the choice: "Squirrel!"

Re: Latest Ricochet Poll Results: Ron Santorich is Our Man!
That vaguely crossed my mind, but I voted for him as my first choice because it appeared to be a survivable setup and he would provide the most interesting discussion to pass the time. On the same grounds, I picked Ron Paul as the second, even though I do find some of his views decidedly weird.
