Later This Day...

I'll be taping an episode of Uncommon Knowledge with the author of The Devil's Delusion: Atheism and Its Scientific Pretensions, Dr. David Berlinski, aka Claire's dad.
The show will go up a week from Monday.
Just so's you know.

Re: Later This Day...
Thank you for the heads up. As a former atheist (now fire-breathin' baptist), I feel about athiests sort of the way many ex-smokers feel about cigarettes. Live and let live, certainly, but do they need to be so nasty? I'll definitely tune in.

Can't wait to hear this one. I am picking up his book at the library today.

Hi Peter,
I just moved to Palo Alto and was wondering if is it possible to attend tapings of Uncommon Knowledge?

Re: Later This Day...
That is great news.
Of Dr. Berlinski's books I have read only his One ,Two, Three: Absolutely Elementary Mathematics. I found it a delightful and demanding read. I loved his witty remarks and I pulled a hamstring in my brain trying to grasp his insight into the deeper meaning of multiplication.

Hey! Say hi to my Pop! I actually didn't realize this.

Re: Later This Day...
The Devil's Delusion is a very enjoyable & provocative read and, contrary to some of the so-called "reviews" on Amazon, not easily dismissed. If Dr Berlinski and I are ever invited to the same dinner party, I am definitely going to lobby to be seated across from him.
I'll be to re-reading the book again this weekend so that I'm up to speed for this encounter.

Hot dog! I'll be there. BTW, tell NRO that their audio RSS feed for UCK is the worst one I have ever encountered.

Re: Later This Day...
Either Berlinski could write about shoe polish and it would be a fascinating and entertaining read. I read The Devil's Delusion. It was one of those books I just couldn't put down.
To my understanding David Berlinski is an agnostic. Nevertheless, he vigorously (and hilariously) critiques the arguments of atheists like Dawkins, Dennett, et al. It's been awhile since I read the book, but I think he even throws in some arguments that a belief in G-d is not unreasonable. Why oh why would a true agnostic take the time and effort to make these arguments!?! I realize that a defense of theism is not the main purpose of the book, but why would an agnostic even take the time to make these arguments. Even on weighty issues I would think that an agnostic may correct someone he thinks wrong, but not with the tenacity that David Berlinski does. This is one of the things I always wondered about David Berlinski.

Just curious, is Dr. Berlinski named after Anyone in particular?

Re: Later This Day...
I love recreational math. (Yes! There is such a thing! That's one of may reasons I love John Derbyshire.) So I'll have to get Dr. Berlinski's his "One, Two, Three: Absolutely Elementary Mathematics".
Please ask him: (1) In his gut does he believe the Riemann hypothesis (the greatest outstanding problem in math currently) to be true? and (2) for any gossip about Claire's previous boyfriends.

Generally, Dr. Berlinski is an iconoclast- he was such in academia, and remains an enthusiastic puncturer of arrogant pretensions.
And the arrogance issue with belief today is not whether you believe or do not believe, it is whether those who are narcissistic materialists are smarter than Believers. There is no ability to prove the points of either side, despite what Dawkins, Coyne, and Derbyshire pretend..
Berlinski handles this by pointing out the preposterous things that militant unbelievers must (oops!) believe in order to sustain their own disbelief.
If that reads as being inconsistent, you read it right. That's Berlinski's point when he describes the nonsense propounded by, for example, militant atheistic string theorizers.

Re: Later This Day...
Sigh. I was hoping the Berlinski junta had a bit more of a command and control structure, but I'll still watch.

I take it we should buy multiple copies of hardcover instead of one in Kindle?

Re: Later This Day...
I always wondered if there was a family connection between the two.
Dr. Berlinski gave a curious answer when Greg Koukl asked him in an interview whether or not he was religious: “Not yet.”

I want to know if David Berlinski has any opinion on the book released by Fr Robert Spitzer, SJ called: New Proofs...
Re: Later This Day...
For David:
Scientists from CERN recently stated that the Higgs Boson may be a "mirage."
Is "mirage" scientific lingo for "we were wrong - there is no such thing?"
If it turns out there is no Higgs Boson, which CERN says they will know for sure by next year, is science at square one when it comes to how matter is formed? Without the Higgs, will science be in no better position than the average layperson to explain matter?
