Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
After announcing on Wednesday that it would no longer fund Planned Parenthood, the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure has now reversed course, capitulating to a frenzy of online and Capitol-Hill protests by "pro-choice" activists (see Diane's earlier post). That's right - after just two days of protest, the foundation capitulated. Come on guys, the French held out longer than that.
A spokesman for the foundation apologized for "recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives." And so, to demonstrate their commitment to "saving lives," they'll keep pumping money into America's largest abortion mill.
The Atlantic proclaims that 2012 is shaping up to be "the year of the virtual protests" given the Komen about-face and the recent SOPA blackouts. I think it's a little early to predict, but I see no harm in a new round of anti-Komen protests from the Right. Who knows? The foundation's management might change their minds again. We know what they are; now we're just quibbling over details.

Re: Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
As I mentioned on the member feed recently, I have always asked Komen, when I am solicited for $$$, whether or not they educate women about the link between abortion and breast cancer, and between hormonal birth control and breast cancer. Since the answer is always, "No," I have never given them any $$$, even when it has caused trouble between me and friends and family members involved in Komen walks and runs.
Finding out that they planned to allow their contracts with Planned Parenthood to expire, I sent Komen a congratulatory note. But no $$$.
You would think that an organization devoted to trying to find a cure and save as many women as possible from the scourge of breast cancer would want very much to get the information out about the danger women face from these threats. The reason they will not accept the link between abortion/the Pill and breast cancer is ideological. Ideology is also the reason I won't donate.

Re: Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
This is beginning to remind me more and more of Aesop's fable of the man, his boy and the donkey. The man kept changing things based on other people's opinion over and over that eventually, they lost the donkey.
Re: Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
I sit on the board of a non-profit. Grants come and go. Sometimes long-term supporters fail to renew for fairly inscrutable reasons.
The message to would-be grantors to left-liberal activist outfits like Planned Parenthood is beware: you stand on the threshold of the donation equivalent of checking into the Hotel California, crawling into a Roach Motel of perpetual support, your other priorities notwithstanding.
Hopefully, PP's scorched earth approach to relationship management will come back to bite the organization.

Re: Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
I avoided commenting earlier on Komen's good decision to quit funding because they're all about money. It is hard to find the info on the internet, but a guy I know had to do business with them and it was not exactly about fighting breast cancer. The "charity" does plenty but make no mistake, the top tier management has raked in the dough and their decision today will be about finances, pure and simple. They were coerced to reverse this and morals had no bearing on the choice.

Don't kid yourselves, guys. Read how carefully the SGK releases were worded.
If you think that PP is going to get new money from them, after this stunt, you need to see my beachfront resort for sale in East Afghanistan.
Mama Toad, I am sympathetic with your view about nthe linkage, but the correlation numbers, which also apply to miscarriages, still don't have a high enough coefficient to hit standard p factors. Right now it is still an interesting "Keep on the lookout", not a rule. Your really need double risk in a case like this; presently it is like the link between beer and cancer.

I am not telling Komen that they should counsel all women to give up birth control and abortion (that's what I would do, but I have some sense of reality!). But especially in women who are genetically at risk for breast cancer, abortion, the pill, and miscarriages as you mention increase their risk very much for breast cancer. To refuse to tell this information to women is to deny some of them life-saving information.

Re: Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
I'm confused why Komen would fund Planned Parenthood at all. Especially since mammograms aren't a service provided by Planned Parenthood. They can refer a client to a service provider and that's about all. I mean if it's about the money it would be far cheaper for Komen to pay the service provider directly than to pay Planned Parenthood to give a referral and pay the service provider for the services. I hate it that everything is always about the money but if that's what it is it should still have to add up.
Re: Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
Duane, I hope you're right, but I wasn't convinced. Didn't the SGK statement assume that the congressional investigation of PP was merely " political?". Of course, even if SGK does turn off the spigot, we now know that Mayor Bloomberg will be there to fill the void. Odd philosophy, our mayor has -- heaven forbid you try to smoke or eat trans fats, but destroying fetuses? No problem.

The behind the scenes stuff is probably movie material.

I earlier linked to some of what I've written on this matter but I also have a new piece on a few positives that came out of this week's fiasco.

In case y'all missed it, here is Steyn's piece on the subject: "Komen has its awareness raised."
These people are thugs, and should be treated as such.

Re: Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
"The National Cancer Institute (NCI), . . . is the Nation’s principal agency for cancer research. . . . As a federal agency, NCI receives its funds from Congress."
In 2010 colorectal cancer killed about 51,000 people, and the NCI spent about $270.4 million on colorectal cancer research. That's about $5,300 per colorectal cancer death.
In 2010 breast cancer killed about 40,000 people, and the NCI spent about $631.2 million on breast cancer research. That's about $15,800 per breast cancer death, three times more per death than NCI spends for colorectal cancer research.
Full disclosure: I have Stage IV colon cancer. I don't argue for or work for or hold fund-raisers for funding for "my" cancer, but I certainly understand why others do for "theirs." There are probably many rational arguments for NCI spending more on breast cancer research than other cancers. One such rational argument is that the the people's representatives have approved it doing so.
One should neither expect, nor even wish, that these decisions would be apolitical. However, in the Era of Obamacare, we need to be especially aware of that fact.

Re: Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
They were pretty careful to say that PP is free to apply for funds. If the evaluation criteria are about women's health, they won't score very well, and the criteria would be made totally public, with no real rejoinder available. There are too many very good recipients.
The larger concern is how SGK will fare financially when the abortion lobby organizes a boycott. We shouldn't let them get away with it.
I, for one, am tired of pink ribbons, since the funding profile of breast cancer vs. prostate cancer is a preposterous comparison. But, in honor of my sainted late mother-in-law, who was my favorite (25 year) breast cancer survivor, I'd kick in now to spite PP.

Re: Komen Foundation: Oops, We Love Planned Parenthood
People,
This is an agregious example of Left Wing Extortion. Planned Parenthood is an organization started by a believer in Eugenics. Eugenics is the exact belief system of Nazi Germany.
I am tired of fighting these people with one moral hand tied behind my back. It is not Nancy Brinker's fault. To continue to run a successful charity she and her staff have caved in to merciless pressure.
She will probably regret it. However, we should concentrate on the criminal, Planned Parenthood, not their victim. I think every form of Lawfare that the Ricochet Musketeers can muster would be appropriate.
By the way, "In Season on The Island", fund raising is the largest single industry by far.
Why that gives me an idea!!! Why don't we target every fund raising event for Planned Parenthood by Lawfare. Tie them up in lawsuits till Hell freezes over!!!
Sweet Dreams from The Island,
Jim
