Why is it that conservatives and Republicans have let the Democrats and the left claim the moral high ground as champions of racial equality and forfeited their noble civil rights legacy?
Why can't the right be as brash and combative as the left and stand up for itself? Why does it end up with John McCain types who won't condemn a racist Rev. Wright or attack an Obama's destructive leftism?
The right risks being forever marginalized unless it fights back against the left's canards and defends the good it has stood for.

I've got to disagree about this one and I'm a big fan of Klavan. Sure, it straightens out some misconceptions about the history of the parties, but that last bit sounds paranoid and conspiratorial, playing into the Left's narrative about Republicans, and fails to answer the question.
Why do blacks vote for Democrats? Because Democrats have successfully slandered Republicans, with a big assist from mainstream media, as racists, as greedy capitalists favoring Big Business over "the little guy", as hypocritical Bible-thumpers, and as bloodthirsty warmongers. Blacks vote for the "nice" party. I vote for the "stupid" party which can't even make a case for itself.
Sorry, Drew. This one didn't cut it.

It always seemed to me that Democrats own the black vote because they are the only party playing racial politics and dividing people along lines of race. Further, Democrats have supported policies like high welfare payments, affirmative action, increased funds for public housing, etc. that seem to help blacks if considered only at a superficial level. Dig down deeper, and all these programs have caused problems more serious than those that they were intended to solve.
One of the big reasons I chose to register Republican was that when I was talking to Republicans, no one assumed what my politics were simply because of the color of my skin, or looked at me funny when I argued against affirmative action, or said things like "Wait, you're a Republican? But you're not white!" All those things and more have been said and done to me by Democrats of many stripes. I have never been taken for granted because of my race by Republicans. It was and still is always the Democrats who sought to categorize and make assumptions about me and others based on race, ethnic background and religion.

While I don't think the Republicans should try to out-pander the Democrats I do think they should stop ceding the high ground and frame an argument that reaches out to blacks. They are one of the more conservative groups in our country and I think there's a receptive audience the GOP can reach. I admire Jack Kemp's efforts in this regard. For now I think it's up to a GOP candidate for whatever office getting black support to show the rest of the party how to do it.

Some cynics I know believe that Republicans could never attract poor "minority" voters so long as Democrats keep giving handouts. I prefer to assume hope and try.
Even if that goal is too much of a long shot to devote millions of dollars to, what does it cost Republicans to point out all the ways Democrats burden and demean the poor when the subject is broached in TV interviews and press conferences? The poor might stubbornly refuse to understand Republican values and policies, but they at least deserve opportunities to make an informed choice.

I don't know but if you want blacks to vote conservative then you have to find a way to win them over rather than blame them for not being convinced already. Obviously something isn't working or else we wouldn't have this post at all.

I imagine it has something to do with who is personally involved in communities. Your average black person probably interacts with very few Republicans in their daily lives, and especially at community functions like church, athletics, school events, clubs, etc. I can only imagine there is a resulting sense of "We are all Democrats" that overrides any kind of cold calculation about classical political philosophy.

Let's not forget that many racist southern Democrats like Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms became Republicans. Terms like "states rights" that conservatives use were used as code for upholding segragation. I can only imagine that the perception of being a white, southern, anti affirmative action party is not very appealing to black people. Today that may be an unfair perception, but Republicans have a fairly recent history of not being to welcoming to black people.

There was an excellent discussion of just that question in Commentary a few months back. The suggestion was made that post-Diaspora Jewish culture adopted a very strong preference for aligning with the dominant urban elites as a survival measure. Given the rise of anti-semitism in Europe and, especially in the White House, here, and the denial of same I hear from Jewish friends, I am reminded of the assimilated and very German Weimer Jews and how that all played out.

Because liberals have so degraded and demoralized blacks that they believe they cannot make it on their own without the "affirmative action" of the Democrats.
The part of the video about blacks migrating from the liberal blighted states to the South reminded me of an article a few year ago by Mark Steyn about changing demographics in New Hampshire resulting from families migrating there from over taxed and over regulated states like Connecticut, Massachusetts or New York and then continuing to vote for the same kind of garbage that ruined those states for them.
