Kim Kardashian for President
Question: What’s the difference between a Federal Jobs Creation Program and Kim Kardashian’s wedding?
Answer: Kim Kardashian’s wedding creates jobs.
Forgive me for linking to my own blog, but when you solve the nation's problems with a single stroke, you just feel compelled to share the word.
Consider it. No money was taken at gunpoint during the making of this wedding. No power was exerted over others. No jumped-up prince of a middle man decided what should or shouldn’t be eaten or drunk or spent or by whom. No useless government department was formed, taking capital out of the economy. No time was wasted by officious bureaucrats who don’t have any reason to do their job efficiently or well. Not at all. Kim, God bless her, wanted — I don’t know what — flowers, let’s say, by the thousands, and so Flora the Florist set to work providing them in return for her daily bread. Kim wanted a cake the size of the Ritz, or whatever, and Charlie the Chef got to work on that. Even the annoying helicopters were freely paid for by someone who, I guess, wanted aerial photos of the nuptials. And the photographers earned their keep because people who want to see the pics will freely buy whatever magazine they’re in.

Re: Kim Kardashian for President
Kim Kardashian probably spent a million dollars or so on her wedding and hence is in an entirely different league of economic stimulus altogether, but let me just say (as someone planning a wedding) that all weddings perform as a great stimulus on the local economy.
Take a look at this graphic. The average cost of a wedding in the U.S., excluding the honeymoon, is $26,984. One in five couples spend more than $30,000 on their wedding, and one in eight couples spend over $40,000.
Maybe the govt should look into policies that would encourage more people to get hitched...

Great thread. Puts me in mind of something I read recently in the WaPo that made me cringe:
Afghan government seeks to ban costly weddings.
So many thoughts, so little time:
One, if you can't afford an extravagant wedding, then for the love of all that's holy, just don't have one. Peer pressure? Sorry, but grow up.
Two, please don't lobby government bureaucrats to step in and prevent others from doing something you can't do just because you can't do it.
Three, the lavish, expensive wedding is "not good for the society"; shall we play another round of "spot the zero-sum fallacy"?
Four, "Law on Prevention of Extravagance in Wedding Ceremonies" would sound hilarious if only they weren't, y'know, serious.
Five, thank heaven this is Afghanistan and not India: One shudders to imagine Bollywood without the lavish Indian wedding scene.
And finally, what are we doing in that backwater again? Making Afghanistan safe for hyper-regulatory tyranny?
Oh, wait. This was a happy thread. Congratulations to the spendy newlyweds. As the merchants sing in Bride and Prejudice, "God bless you for getting / this marriage into town!"

That is probably what is really behind the big push for gay marriage, economic stimulus. :o

Kim Kardashian for President. Now that's a campaign you can really get behind!

I don't understand why some people are so eager to have florists and caterers denied work and sent to the unemployment lines.
It's like our president's crusade to have corporate jet mechanics lose their jobs.
I just don't get it.

Kim Kardashian would be the butt of jokes (or the reverse) if she were to be elected.

Congratulations, Diane. Are there pet displacement issues to worry about?
