Just Call Me "Pecos Pete"
When I was a little kid, my father used to call me "Pecos Pete," after a comic book character who had been popular when he himself was a boy, and all my life--during an upbringing in New York, an education in New England, and a career based almost entirely in Washington, New York, and, now, California, I've looked upon Texas as the most alluring and romantic place in America, always wishing, somewhere in the back of my mind, that I could become a Texan myself.
And you know what? As of this morning, I did.
With my thanks to the forty-seventh governor of the Lone Star State, who surprised me after I interviewed him for Uncommon Knowledge in Austin. And when I say "with my thanks," I mean it. When I got home to California an hour ago, I was so excited that I summoned all the kids to look at this--and they thought it was pretty darned cool, too.
I'm already shopping for cowboy boots. (The governor told me I was now entitled to wear boots, especially when I'm in California.) Oh, and if this sounds like boasting, undermining that wonderfully kind post this past weekend in which Troy was kind enough to call me humble--humble, at least, for a former speechwriter--as I say, if this sounds like boasting, well, you've just got to understand. We Texans are a proud people.

I stayed up about an hour too late listening to AATW after posting that last night. I just can't get enough of that band or Ray's voice. He ain't half bad for a Philadephian Jew transplant.

I got to meet Ray once, at a benefit. He's a big dude. My favorite is still Hot Rod Lincoln, but only when they do it live ("But sir I got an excuse. You see, I was Asleep at the Wheel!"). Besides being thoroughly entertaining on stage, he's a great producer, and did my friend Dale Watson's Dreamland album.

I met the Texas Playboys at the Eagles club in Big Spring when I was young enough to not remember how old I was. I do remember my dad telling me that it would be important to me one day. Great music, great people.

Re: Just Call Me "Pecos Pete"
Well, Peter if you're fixin' to gear up may I suggest Lucchese boots, Resistol hats , and no state income tax !
Stetson has been bought by Resistol and as it was located here in St Joe,Mo. it's texan charm was lacking. ( now if you can find one like mine, well....there might be one at the Menger)
When I lived in Austin, we'd go to Liberty Lunch and listen to Joe Carrasco. Rollicking good times.

Re: Just Call Me "Pecos Pete"
Peter, I'm a bit interested in your perceptions of Perry after sitting down with him. What do you now assess of the Republican Party's decision to toss him aside in the presidential race without giving him a serious second look? Do you think he has any realistic political future outside of Texas?

Option 1: you can have one given to you. (this is how I got mine)
Option 2: you can buy one and wear it.
Option 3: You can get on a bull or a bronc and stay there for 8 seconds and earn one and then not just wear it but own it.

Re: Just Call Me "Pecos Pete"
I guess now that you're a Texan, we can tell you about the fireants....
You gave a really remarkable speech and conducted a masterful interview with the Governor. We had a fantastic time at the meet-up. Don't be a stranger, now, y' hear?
Re: Just Call Me "Pecos Pete"
Listen to this week's Ricochet Podcast.
Re: Just Call Me "Pecos Pete"
Heya Pecos, what say you, me and some of the kids head down to the local shooting range sometime soon? You being from Texas now should really help your aim.

I think all Pecos Pete needs to complete his new image is a copy of Seamus Kennedy's "Sidekicks and Sagebrush"
