The events in Egypt should inspire us all to raise taxes:

Citing the pro-democracy unrest in Egypt and Tunisia, Gov. Jerry Brown called it “unconscionable” that GOP legislators are vowing to block his attempt to ask voters to extend tax hikes to balance the budget.

“When democratic ideals and calls for the right to vote are stirring the imagination of young people in Egypt and Tunisia and other parts of the world, we in California can’t say now is the time to block a vote of the people,” Brown said.

Unless it’s Proposition 8, that is. The governor also said:

“ . . . the people are telling us -- in their own way -- they sense something is profoundly wrong. They see that their leaders are divided when they should be decisive and acting with clear purpose.”

In their own way! They’re so cute, like little barky dogs that turn around in nervous circles when they need to go outside. And the people sense something is wrong, too. What is it, girl? Timmy fell down the well? He can’t get out because environmental regulations forbid disturbing the habitat of a well-dwelling paramecium? Good girl! I’ll file an appeal!

I don't think it will be too long before those inscrutable people are in the California streets, calling for the ouster of their ruler.

A basket-case governor for a basket-case state. Beware, America. Jerry Brown in just another part of our plan to go totally bust so the rest of you can bail us out before Mr. Obama is ushered into his retirement.

I'm beginning to believe that snark and condescension are born of the self-esteem movement in our schools.  If you've been told your whole life how smart and talented you are, and oh-so-perfect, why would you not think you're right all the time?

On a personal note, I was informed yesterday by one of my students that homework is child abuse.  I told him that if he didn't sit down and shut his yap, I'd take a yardstick and give him a first-hand lesson in child abuse.  I'll probably get called on the carpet for my remark, but it felt soooooo good in the moment.

Continuing with Mr. Lileks' canine analogy, Californians are akin to the Bumpus' dogs in A Christmas Story.  They've realized the turkey is all cleaned off, there's nothing left, and they're sprinting out the door to Nevada and beyond (at least the ones with income to protect). I won't quote Old Man Parker, as we have decorum here on Ricochet.

According to the California legislative assembly website Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 2 to 1 in both houses (52-27 in the assembly 24-14 in the senate). Are tax rates a two-thirds issue that the Republicans can actually block, or is Jerry pre-emptively deflecting the blame for this economic train wreck?

Yes, we are telling him in our own humble ways.  I'm not articulate enough to explain stuff, so I just tug at my crotch and spit on the ground.

Got that, Jerry?

Yes of course, vote for higher taxes in California in support of the teeming Egyptian masses yearning to change one thugocracy with another.

Do it for the children and polar bears too.

Well, California does grow a lot of dates - they have that in common with Egypt.  (Other than their out of touch rulers, of course.)

All we heard from the liberal media during the election out here was that Jerry Brown was the only one that could deal with the unions.  (Like Nixon going to China...get it?) Hogwash then, hogwash now.

Higher taxes. That's all the democrats know.  One trick ponies, the lot of them.  (To expand the animal analogy a bit further.)

My fellow Americans.  Write your congressman.  DO NOT BAIL US OUT!  The elected officials of California are like drug addicts.  Only without the sense of responsibility.

I think there's an astrophysical anomaly that appears to affect those in Northern California. Kenneth is no doubt immune from it. But it seems to explain Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, Pete Stark, Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsome, the city of San Francisco and squishy Republicans in Sacramento. I mean look what happened to Arnold. This pro-business, multi-gazillionaire conservative Republican movie star gets the support of a majority of Republicans in the state, is elected, moves up to Sacramento and 'poof' instant RINO!

I know that when I drive my SUV through the streets of San Francisco onlookers are confused by the appearance of an Apple logo on the rear window. "...but he has an Apple logo...but he drives an SUV...head hurts...so confused."

Probably time to dust off the idea of cleaving the state in half. At least those in Hollywoodland, despite their incessant socialist babbling are still driven by the profit motive. Of course, happy to trade Silicon Valley for Hollywood.

I love a good rant as much as anyone, but the last time I was in the parking garage at 1 Infinite Loop there were mostly sports cars and SUVs. There was a vintage, very well maintained VW microbus, and the selection of bumper stickers was a hoot, but overall a pretty normal experience.

Just my conservative paranoia talking then. Will go back to my Happy Meal.
