It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
As has become tradition, we celebrate Jewish Christmas here at Ricochet. As Claire Berlinski wrote last year:
Of course, on Ricochet we welcome everyone of any faith, creed or color, so long as he's on the right side of the political spectrum and he's not an annoying troll. So today we'll also be celebrating Druze, Rastafarian, Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, Bahá'í, Shinto, Zoroastrian, Manichaeian, Bábist, Confucian, Muslim, Taoist, Wicca, Druid, Santeria, Falun Gong, and plain old Godless Christmas, as well as lonely Christians without anywhere to go on Christmas Christmas, Christians who just have to get away from their in-laws for a few minutes or they're going to lose it Christmas, not to mention Armenian Christian Christmas, because Armenian Christians don't celebrate Christmas today.
So, what type of Chinese food are you ordering today? What are your traditions today?

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
Traditionally, it's lunch at My Parents' Home, then We check the stockings that have been hung by the chimney with care; yes, every year.
But today is another story. Rain has turned to sleet has now turned to snow, and lots of it Here.
Since Texans, and you californians, can't drive safely in such conditions I don't think I'll be leaving the House today.

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
Christmas ales are my favorite tradition. Plus, it's really the only time I get to sing "Messiah" along with the London Philharmonic at full volume.
fwiw, you forgot the more fundamentalist christians, for whom Christmas is an imitation of a pagan holiday...and, yes, they are truly sincere! I spent my early days trying to figure a calculus that let me join in the celebration. :-)
Oh. And we''re having meats and cheeses for dinner - very simple, but I get to try and trick my wife into eating the goat cheese.

It's also a little unsettling to realize that we are of an age where our kids are creating their own family traditions...and we are now a supporting cast rather than the producers, directors or stars.

Ditto, but I'm finding it fun to watch my sons try to put things together instead of me.
I'm now only on the entertainment committee.

tabula rasa...yes, I agree totally. Especially since our daughter got the girls we wished on her in her more "difficult" moments!

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
That's right, Mollie, no Christmas today! But last night and this morning, dozens of Christmas trees were delivered to the church. It is cheaper for the tree lots to give them to us than to dispose of them. Many of the trees will become a huge cave inside the church, inside of which a large Nativity icon will be placed. Others will be arranged outside and covered with lights. Soon florists will bring the unsold poinsettias, which will fill the front of the church. The effect will be magical, as always.
Today's tradition also includes fish for lunch, for the last time until Christmas, thirteen days from now. And, Christmas shopping begins with tomorrow's sales!

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
Well, I'm vacationing in Key West doing a lot of nothing. I'll be going to synagogue this weekend; my Rabbi back home recommends the local synagogue. I'm not sure whether I will have Chinese food tonight, and I definitely won't be going bowling or watching a movie, so there goes the Trinity of Jewish Christmas activities.
I would like to recommend a Christmas tune for the Christians among the membership: We Three Kings, sung by the Roches. Priceless.

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
My first Christmas as an empty-nester. My wife is working (she's a nurse) so I was home alone. My daughter rescued me by picking up pizza and bringing it out to the farm. I repaid her by beating her in a game of hand and foot. Sorry Daughter!
Now we are watching "the Help"
Merry Christmas!!
We might shoot a bit later. :-)

Got the news from son #2 and his wife today on a videoconference we set up that grandchild #8 is on the way, due in July. Next to meditating on the Savior's birth and all He's done for us, that's the best news of all.

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
Congrats jarhead!
I'm working at home today, preparing for a site visit that starts Wednesday afternoon. Have to go in soon to do a couple of hours of lab work for the project and then back to the pile of paperwork on my dining room table. For me, it's just another day on the calendar, only much, MUCH quieter. Bummer there isn't anything on the radio but Christmas music. Maybe I should re-run some Ricochet podcasts... and get back to work!
To those celebrating, have a wonderful day; I hope it meets and exceeds all of your fondest expectations.

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
We decided to borrow a different Christmas tradition from our Gentile neighbors and made tamales. Not bad for a first effort.

Today, I am Triskelion.
I won two thousand quatloos for joining, and it's taught me how to be successful with the other gender.

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
We spent most of the day at my uncle's home in central Missouri. We always eat early in the day and then have to drive home. For well over dozen years we have been (secretly) going to a local Chinese restaurant for Christmas dinner. If my parents found out that we do that after spending time with the family...they would be aghast! It's now a Christmas tradition just for our little family. When we first started doing this years ago, we only saw divorced Dads and their kids. Now we see all sorts of families, including some very large parties. There is only so much turkey and ham you can eat!

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
This Christmas was the first I played (a Punjabi) Santa.
The kids sprung me at once, but otherwise: personal best.

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
No need for a Chinese restaurant! We do “Sneaking Duck”: get a couple of boneless duck breasts, optionally glaze them with honey on the skin side, and roast for about 14 minutes at 220 °C. Slice into bite-sized pieces and serve with hoisin sauce and slices of green onions of comparable size. We forgo the traditional pancakes (flour tortillas) because we're all paleo here.
Add one duck breast for each person at the feast.
If they're not impressed, don't invite 'em back.
But they always come back.

Re: It's Time For Ricochet's Annual Jewish Christmas!
Teriyaki chicken skewers, scallion pancakes, sesame chicken, and chicken chow fun. Nothing exotic, but we were checking out a hitherto unsampled restaurant, and wanted to make sure they can handle the basics.

A staple of a South Texas Christmas, those.
