Interesting stuff about border defense in Europe. I really had no idea the EU countries defended their borders so formidably as I am in the exclusive Schengen club that allows unrestricted travel into and around the EU. It does show their bleating about the Israeli walls in new light, though.

Woolly hat pulled low over his forehead, a pistol in his holster and all manner of technological back-up, Reh is part of a 175-strong rapid border intervention team deployed to the area by the EU last November. But for the increasingly concerned Greek government, such reinforcements are deemed insufficient. The socialist government has recently announced that it plans to build a razor-wire fence along the border. It will, say officials, be equipped with sonar systems and thermal sensors and be modelled along the lines of similar "walls" in Spain, Lithuania and France.

(Emphasis mine).

Edit: Of course I forgot to give credit where it is due. Hat tip: Instapundit. I hope Prof. Reynolds forgives this lapse.

I'm still learning about how this whole thing works - I first put my hat tip to Glenn in this comment, then figured out that I could edit the first post, and finally realized I couldn't delete the comment.

Yes, the border hypocrisies are astounding. It is inherent in the concept of nationhood that the nation controls who enters for the protection of the polity.

On the southern border, Mexico deals very harshly with illegals from the south, but those natives northbound to send precious dollars back to Mexico have education programs dedicated to the frustration of gringo law enforcement.

I had no idea about this type of border control, either, Bjarni. Thanks for teaching me something!

I believe the science has been settled, Arizonans are racist. I don't want no stinkin fence, I want a WALL. "Mr. Obama, build me a wall!"

Landmines cost about as much as a box of Fruit Loops.

The landmines could actually be baited with Fruit Loops.

How shortsighted of Obama, the first "Shovel Ready" jobs available were to complete the border fence. If anyone would do a cost benifit analysis, it would have paid for itself..

Landmines are noisy: The green folk have pushed "Catch and Release" for a long time... Leghold traps are an option..

Ever had the pleasure of visiting Nuevo Laredo ? Just the filth and stench of the place should be enough... Would like to see the expressions on a few faces once they learned they were fresh game in town...

Unfortunately, I have.  And you're right...

Wouldn't spending time in NL just fuel the open border advocates' fire?

A locked down border makes a lot of sense if you run a cradle to grave entitlement system.  It's really the only way to go.
