Now, the thing about a Jewish Christmas is that you tend to get a little bored. And it wouldn't be right for me to go out to the movies while I'm supposed to be watching the store here at Ricochet. I've already finished the oyster sauce tofu, and there's still a few hours left before it would be okay just to get in bed and relax with the latest issue of Turkish Policy Quarterly. So, devoted as always in my quest to keep Ricochet entertained, I've been looking for Jewish-Christmassy news on the Internet.

I wound up--don't ask me how--watching the Queen's Christmas speech:

Then I got (mildly) curious about her earlier speeches. Here's the first televised one, from 1957:

Doesn't it seem as if it must have been way more fun to be the Queen back then? I mean, being imperious was actually her job

An aside: I guess you've seen Peggy Noonan's take on The Iron Lady, but if not ...

How did the Queen and Maggie Thatcher get along? Just from watching the 1957 speech, it seems like they would be on the same wavelength.

The thing about any version of Christmas is that you get a little (or a lot) bored. Once you get reacquainted with everyone and exchange the presents boredom starts setting in. Plus there is only so much you can eat. You can hit the Cineplex or just enjoy the opportunity to lay around and relax.

Note to self: must ask my Rabbi re oyster sauce tofu. (I personally like tofu, but it smacks of liberalism.)

Excellent video.

"It is too easy to cast aside old things that seem to have no value..."

Her sentiment is the essence of conservatism: Be careful not to throw wrenches into the gears of a clearly superior society.

God Bless the Queen.

She had to put up with an enormous amount of snobbery from the Palace, apparently--not so much from the Queen (or not that I've heard), but from the hangers-on.

Remember, she came from a lower-middle-class family. Her accent, the one with which you're familiar, was a fake.
