Re: Islamophobia?
Klavan's article is a masterpiece. So much distilled in so little space. Congratulations. I hope Mayor Bloomers reads it.

Re: Islamophobia?
Being a kaffir I consider Islamophobia if not a sign of sanity at least a reasonable response to the daily horrors perpetrated in the name of allah --suicide bombings, beheadings, female genital mutilations, child marriages, stonings, amputations --must stop Ricochet limits me to 200 words. Heaping scorn and abuse is the way the Left tries to shut down every debate but, in this case, the Bloombergs, the Zakarias, et al, need to come up with something better than Islamophobia.

Re: Islamophobia?
This is the weakness of blogging: it depends on the pulp media producing stuff for bloggers to hoot at. That isn't going to last forever. I myself think it is long over. There is NO news. In 2010 or any year, "Islamophobia" is not news. (In 2009, the ONLY news was "Tegucigalpa.") Now if someone anywhere reported on "Islamophilia," THAT would be noteworthy. I wonder if the thing even exists.
Re: Islamophobia?
Magnificent column. This question caught my attention: "Does the Left really cherish the rights of Islam, or is theirs but a short-sighted alliance with the enemy of their enemies?" I think it is more likely the latter,..but I wouldn't rule out sheer cowardice as a motivator, as it also proved to be with Comedy Central.

Re: Islamophobia?
I read the article last night and was, as I always am with Klavan, most impressed. My sense is that the left doesn't give a rat's a** about Islam. They simply choose to put themselves in opposition to anything that the right supports. They are by nature oppositional/defiant children, adolescents who never quite got over revolting against daddy and those "over thirty." I am certain if those of us who profess a love of this country were to suddenly decide that Islam wasn't bad, the left would turn immediately Islamophobic and denigrate the treatment of women and the host of other behaviors they claim to be the in opposition to in this country but seem unable to see in Islamic culture. That really is their driving force.

Wow. Have I ever disagreed with you Drew on any issue? I take it all back. This is about as effective a piece of prose as I can remember reading. I too hope it gets read by the folks that need to read it.

Re: Islamophobia?
A truly impressive piece. Well done, Mr. Klavan. In an early Uncommon Knowledge interview on the topic of the Sixties, with Peter Robinson moderating WFB and Christopher Hitchens, Mr. Buckley stated that the civil rights movement was not a high point for the country because it was "anti-thought and anti-rational." Though I do think the civil rights movement was a high point for the US, the same criticism can be leveled against the Left in its claims of "Islamophobia" over opposition to the GZM. It is a knee-jerk reaction which itself lacks thought and stops people from rational consideration of the issue.
