Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
As member Trace Urdan pointed out last week, Yale University is under investigation after 16 students and administrators claimed the school failed to act appropriately to allegations of sexual harassment.
However, I was most shocked by claims made by National Affairs managing editor Meghan Clyne in a guest column in the New York Post on Wednesday. She makes a connection between the sexualized nature of school-wide, sanctioned events and the frat-boy hostility that led to the complaints.
I have to agree. And I'm shocked by what she writes. Should I be?
The Women's Center has hosted screenings of lesbian pornography, workshops on drag and talks about "sex toys and how to get the most out of them." In 2006, the event "Who's on Top" was intended to address lack of "discussion about the act of penetrative sex itself" and to explore feminist Andrea Dworkin's theory "that intercourse and patriarchy are inseparable." The center even throws naked parties to boost Yale women's sense of body image.
...Yale dorms have hosted risqué dances like "Exotic Erotic" (the less you wear, the less you pay) and a "Drag Ball" at the culmination of Trans Awareness Week. Freshmen are welcomed to the university with mandatory orientation seminars that include discussions of flavored lubricants and a demonstration on how to put a condom on a wooden phallus.
And classrooms are opened each spring to "Sex Week," which has included talks by porn stars, advice on masturbation, discussions of "erotic piercing" and a "fetish fashion show."
My goodness. How college has changed.
Please, parents and/or college students out there: Is this typical? I thought Rutgers's invitation to Snooki was bad. Then I read Clyne.

Re: Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
As offensive as this is, it's simply no surprise. Was it Northwestern that was just in the news for something very similar?
Rome, here we come.
Re: Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
Yes, Yale will have to step it up to compete with Northwestern's recent live, in-class sex show.
Re: Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
This is, indeed, shocking. Also: where was all of this when I was at Yale?

Where were these courses when I was in school...and young and energetic enough to appreciate them?

"Intercourse and the patriarchy are inseparable," says the feminist. She's conceding then that her life's work will be in vain. Way to fire up the troops, lady.
Re: Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
Yes, I saw that, too. But at least the class was called "Human Sexuality."
For some reason, I see this Yale stuff as different. More pervasive. Its tentacles reach into all areas of life, it seems. Parents got emails from one of the complainants in the Yale case. All Yale parents! So the class parent list was given out to one of the crazies involved? Inappropriate, in my eyes.
All classes participate in Sex Week? Even statistics? Creative writing? Introduction to music?
It just all seems so crazy to me. I realize I'm sheltered and naive in some cases, but I went to college, too. The "cutting edge" stuff then was about race relations. I could get into that. See its value, for sure. But this?

Tom Wolfe’s I Am Charlotte Simmons is already an historical period novel.

You're lucky there weren't webcams in the 50s, Rob.

Good point. What an unbelievable waste of money ....

I had the same exact thought, TeeJaw! Crazy, right?

Re: Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
Have things changed? I was at Sydney University in 1976 and 1977. Yes, we had a sex week, with films on masturbation, displays by various lobby groups promoting their own views. Amongst these was the 'Festival of Light' Christian right-to-life group. Amusingly, the demonstrators against this group was AD HOC (Active Defence of Homosexuals on Campus).
Perhaps things were different in Australia to the US. By the mid-70s many of the broadcasting barriers had been breached. An evening soap opera featured occasional full front nudity, although four letter words were still forbidden. Since then, the nudity has been scaled back, and pushed further into the evening, while the language restrictions have been more or less eliminated after 9:30pm.

Between this and the Planned Parenthood story, it only reinforces my perception of the opposition.

Their "Yale education" sounds like a half step forward and fifty steps backward. All I can say is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roGcPxEvYAw

Re: Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
On the whole, this would be much more visually appealing at Arizona State. With a cheaper cover charge. Though maybe we can compromise on Vanderbilt. Nothin but little blonde pony tails in little red convertibles, as I hazily recall.

Re: Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
I'm mainly affronted by the impulse to come up with some academic philosophy to give cover to this. Needlessly complicated. Surely naked sorority girls are an end in themselves.
I shall now go watch the "dear woman" video three times in ritual self-denunciation.

Re: Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
This is where the moral squalor and relativism of the academic left land us. Universities that once acted in loco parentis now act as pimps and sex toy instructors. Caligula would feel right at home.

Re: Is this Yale they're talking about? Or the Playboy Mansion?
This sounds like an Ivy League thing.
I go to SAC (nothing to brag about -_-), and we don't have anything like that here. I think this is something that only happens in the decadent extremely wealthy Ivy League schools.
This reminds me of high school, the kids going to the richer schools did all kinds of drugs and the poorer schools had less drug activity simply because students couldn't afford them, hahaha (cries).

I agree 100%, Ursula. I had been following all the Yale sex week posts on PhiBetaCons at NRO that were provided by a Yale undergrad.
I gave my daughter I Am Charlotte Simmons before she left for college so she whould know what campus life would hold and could see an example of how it corrupted a girl who would, on the surface, seem like the least likely freshman to be corrupted. Her campus is almost an extension of Wall Street, so the speakers and events are heavily drawn from business tycoons and business journalists. (Plus performing artists, mostly from Broadway.) The school also has lots of commuters and kind of a fragmented student body who use NYC as both their playground & campus. So I've not heard reports of overt perversion being pushed by the school. But even Notre Dame performed the Vagina Monologues. There seems to be no escaping the culture of debauchery.
