Is That All We're Worth to You, Pakistan?
So, from today's headlines:
Pakistan’s military, including its powerful spy agency, has spent $4 million over two decades in a covert attempt to tilt American policy against India’s control of much of Kashmir—including funneling campaign donations to members of Congress and presidential candidates, the F.B.I. claimed in court papers unsealed Tuesday.
Four million dollars? Over twenty years? Someone in Pakistan thought they could buy influence in the United States for that? Look, ISI, you're epically confused. That doesn't even amount to the interest on our debt for the coming twenty minutes. Interest, mind you. On our debt. Frankly, we don't even consider that amount of money a decent tip to leave the waitress.
We're a superpower. Do not insult our powerful Congress with these lowball offers.

I'd be quite happy with a $4M tip... until it becomes worthless.

On such tangential issues some congresscritters can be had for a low five figures. All of those campaign filings make excellent reading.

Also remember, it was just our own money coming back from the taxpayers to the congress critters, sometimes it travels through the ethanol lobby and sometimes through the ISI.

Exactly Sisyphus. I fear Ms. Berlinski overestimates our representatives' skills in haggling the best value for their services, as in all things they underwhelm.

I think Claire's comments are in the vein of P.J. O'Rourke:
We're the big boys, Jack, the original, giant, economy-sized, new and improved butt kickers of all time. When we snort coke in Houston, people lose their hats in Cap d'Antibes. And we've got an American Express credit card limit higher than your piss-ant metric numbers go.

The ISI should've invested the $4M in their film industry. If you want to win us over, entertain us. At this point, India wins because everything I know about Kashmir I learned from Hindi films! (And you can guess who the bad guys are...)
