I must say that as a Californian, this news was music to my ears:

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman says the budget-cutting and union-fighting tactics employed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie provide a perfect “roadmap” for her plans in California.

Could California end up with its very own version of Chris Christie? One can only hope.

Whitman will have to work hard to match Christie's wit and laser-like focus on getting the job done at all costs. Whether she can (or would want to) match his girth, which, I think, is where he derives a lot of his aura of authority from, is another story.

I don't think this is the case for females. While portly men convey an aura of authority, corpulent women often seem insecure and diffident.

Not to derail this conversation but I disagree. I think that the issue isn't one's body size so much as how one carries themselves. Skinny or fat, male or female -- it's all about being in tune with your assets. Many folks just don't have physical confidence or a commanding presence. But any good corpulent opera singer usually has all of these things.

Whitman is a) not going to win and b) going to be saddled with a lunatic legislature if she does. California's problems are intractable given the overwhelming power of the unions, the veniality of her legislators, and the thick headiness of her voters. No one here is willing to face reality like they are in NJ. Either another bubble will allow us to kick the can down the road or the state will just go bankrupt.

No.

Meg Whitman hasn't the slightest idea what she believes, other than that she would rather like to swan around having people call her "Governor". (One doesn't get that sort of breathless respect being CEO of a company that brokers web deals for Beanie Babies).

Chris Christie wouldn't prostitute himself for an endorsement by Michael Bloomberg.

Chris Christie wouldn't have swooned over Van Jones on a romantic Alaska cruise.

Chris Christie never contributed to Barbara Boxer.

Meg Whitman is a wealthy dilettante. She'll compromise at the very first sign of confrontation.

Chris Christie is the real deal.

Just when you think that Diane has Kenneth in a take-down, Kenneth twists out and scores a reverse. Nice!

Ah Kenneth. Don't stay away so long next time.

Well I'm voting against Jerry Brown. And this is one race where my San Francisco vote may actually count.

The gubernatorial candidate on the Libertarian line is a poodle in hot pants.

I figure the poodle will be every bit as effective against our moonbat legislature as Whitman would be.

Um, no.

Christie is conservative.

For once, Kenneth and I agree.

Michael -- I don't think anyone seriously disputes that Christie is for real and Whitman is a squish waiting to happen, but would you, like Kenneth, withhold your vote on the basis of principle in this case? It seems that we are debating this point over and over here. I live in the state and I it matters too much (I think) to vote for a poodle in hot pants just to make a point that may or may not be appreciated by anyone.

I'll dodge the question by saying I don't think it makes much difference in California whether or not you have a Republican Governor. California needs a GOP assembly and senate.
