The Los Angeles Times reports on what happened when the U.S. Government decided to airlift to Iraq $12 billion in shrink-wrapped bricks of $100 bills. What happened? Well, they lost over half of it.

And to this day, they have no idea if it was stolen or what.

The Times points out that $6.6 billion is enough cash to run the Los Angeles Unified Public School District for a year. I don't think they intended to minimize the loss, but I guess you can completely waste or abuse that amount of cash in many ways if you're the government.

As I struggle to pay my taxes each year, I find such blatant disregard for financial controls to be obscene. Can anything be done about all of this waste, fraud and mismanagement?

It’s better to lose the money because it’s simply indefensible. Good money is likely to follow bad when tax dollars are wasted in some ill-conceived government program. Nobody will argue that if we’d only lost more money some problem will be solved or ameliorated. Not even Barney Frank can argue that we haven’t lost enough.

If we're going to lose so much at once, they could at least sponsor a National Poker Night so can feel daring.

Yeah...ok.

Yeah...ok.

I choose to believe that cash is funding black ops.

So I suppose I'm on the waste side of the question.

There's a Kelly's Heroes remake waiting to be based on this.
