Some intrigue at my alma mater, Asbury Park High School (NJ).

From 2007 to 2009 Asbury Park coach Don Sofilkanich led the Blue Bishops to 3 straight New Jersey sectional titles (we don’t have one state champ in Jersey, we have 16 sectional champs, but that may change next year).

In 2010, coach Sofilkanich left Asbury Park for the neighboring Neptune Township Scarlet Flyers (what a goofy name for a football team!), our arch nemesis who we have played on Thanksgiving Day going back a century.

Last year after the coach left us for Neptune we were 5-5.

This year in 2011, Sofilkanich quit Neptune to coach a private school, and we’ve bounced back.  We are 9-1 and facing our rivals Neptune tomorrow who are also 9-1.

I predict Asbury Park 21, Neptune 6 (same winner I pick every year!).

Are any of you going to any interesting football rivalries tomorrow?

Friday, but not tomorrow.

Probably a decade ago, Rick Reilly--who then wrote the column at the end of each Sports Illustrated--wrote a column entitled something like "The Best $5 in Sports."  It was a tribute to good high school football games:  his point was that you get better games and more talent per dollar expended at a good high school football game than anywhere in sports.  I agree with him completely.

All three of my sons were high school football players (two played college rugby).  I love high school football.

My high school is in the semi-finals for the state championship in Oregon on Friday. I may not go, but I've followed them quite a bit. It's a Catholic school that has been dominating the state for several years now. Some have complained that they are too good and should not be allowed to compete with the public schools. Surprise, surprise.

Unfortunately, no.  The high school I attended is a traditional power in Missouri prep football.  Since moving to South Carolina, though, I continue to be awed by the level of talent around here.  Byrnes High, until recently a fixture in the national rankings, will play this weekend in the state semifinals, and Gaffney, Dorman and Spartanburg High have multiple state championships in the last 15 years.  And the local enthusiasm even exceeds the talent level.  Byrnes built a new stadium a few years ago.  It features an honest-to-God Jumbotron and NFL-style personal seat licenses.  No joke.

Having  played football in Wisconsin, I was bemused to learn the high school football season in some states goes beyond mid-November.  The high school football season in Wisconsin ends the Friday before the start of deer hunting season (which is typically the third Saturday in November).

I distinctly remember playing a junior high game in mid-october where we had two inches of snow.  I also remember a 12 degree game in high school, with a strong wind, and a bit of frostbite.

Maybe playing on Thanksgiving is not such a great idea?
