Some days there's nothing better than a piping hot bowl of schadenfraude for breakfast. I think its safe to say that most readers of Ricochet are no fans of bloated Ivy League tuition fees with their helium filled grading system. But things quickly spin out of control a little more quickly if you've been duped into spending big dollars for a law school education only to find yourself unemployed because you've been misled by employment statistics that the school used to lure you in the first place.

Does that sound like just the type of preposterous blamegoating that only a lawyer could love? Well, then not only have you been following the decline of American civilization closely, but you too could be eligible for dollars, prizes and a front row seat to the next big bubble in America: Higher Education.

To wit, from the WSJ:

Law schools across the country are gearing up to greet the freshest batch of wannabe lawyers later this month. But some will be dealing with more than just ice cream socials and welcome parties – namely, lawsuits alleging the schools purposefully inflated employment statistics to attract more students.

But there's another twist to the story. Did they go after Ivy League schools? No. Why not? Follow the money:

Plaintiffs’ attorney David Anziska said his firm, Kurzon Strauss LLP, chose these two particular law schools in large part because of their large class sizes, with Cooley – at about 1,000 students in each year – the biggest in the country by far.

My suggestion? Troy, Richard and John you'd better listen to the voices on the LawTalk hotline very carefully.

Ivy league tuitions are not any higher than most schools much, much lower in the rankings.

It is making me chuckle to think these law schools will be hoisted by their own petards.  Ha ha!  I also suspect that for law schools, the rankings do greatly impact employment success, so the top 14 schools may not have the obvious fraud that those lower in the chain will now scramble to explain.  That's really not so true for other majors or for kids coming out with a BA and BS degree.

I hope they win. Then I can sue my graduate school for inflating placement rates by counting adjunct positions. What a canard!
