In other news, Poland is begging Germany to save Europe from Apocalypse (that's a story many of us thought we'd never see); Russia has activated its missile warning system (it's been put "on combat alert," according to the Kremlin's Twitter feed); rockets were fired from Lebanon across the Israeli border, and the Kuwaiti government resigned yesterday, but I guess these days that barely ranks.

Oh, and Breivik was declared insane. And AA went bankrupt, which they really deserved--their customer service was terrible.

I'm not sure I understand Russia's thinking, beyond an excuse to put their forces on alert that is.  It's like in California where it's legal to own a gun, which can kill you, but illegal to own body armor, which can't.  I can't see an ABM program as anything but defensive.  If they were smart they'd let us spend all kinds of money buying, building, and haphazardly maintaining an expensive missile shield which costs them nothing to compete with.

AA is bankrupt? I thought they were fully self-supported based on voluntary donations?
Oh, wait. Different AA.

Claire,

Thank you for the news digest this morning.  You truly are a ray of sunshine.  Not that you don't keep us informed about the world outside our "world," but if you add a little more Southeast Asia and a dash of South America, Berlinski's News Nuggets or Around the World in Three Minutes with Claire could be a regular feature.  The world needs aggregators too, Claire.  Just throwing that out there.

American Airlines, the thirteenth step, once you've come to grips with the fact that killing yourself with alcohol is too painful and takes too long. Especially since armageddon appears so close. I actually had to sit in Naussau for 4 hours waiting for a new AMR plane recently but they put us up overnight and flew us home on a different airline the next day. I always wonder if the insane cost structure of  these companies is causing the fleet to age and be less reliable. Orderly bankruptcy in this industry is commonplace...I wonder if the ECB is watching them.

I'm not sure what this has to do with whether Sarah Palin is getting into the presidential race, Claire. I'm confused.

What jumped out of this post for me was that the Kremlin has a twitter feed.

Me too. And not only that, but that it was used to make such a major announcement in such a fashion as one's sister declared what she had for breakfast.

I am shocked that Iran would criticize these "protesters" who magically appeared right after opposition forces blasted near nuclear facilities yesterday.  Is this not a wag the dog issue for them or am I off?

Attacking the Brits in a mullah ordered "mob".....probably secret police/army has to be a desperate act and I am curious what drove them to order such a distraction and if the upcoming crackdown on their citizenry will be successful or not.

I am also shocked that comical statements like'"hey this isnt hezbollah" can be made right next to "more sophisticated rockets than prior" somehow flies by without an analysis that this is all Iran directed.  Here is the quote from your article Claire.

"A security analyst and former UNIFIL member Timur Goksel said the attack did not bear characteristics of Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed Shi'ite guerrilla army and political movement that fought a 34-day border war with Israel in 2006.

But he said the attack was unusual, first because it was in a Christian village not usually a site of rocket launchings, and second because the weapon used was a longer range Grad missile that had better aim compared to the older, shorter rockets which are fired randomly.

"This looks more serious. The type of rocket and apparent targeting of settlements suggests they were not noisemakers, they actually hit something and didn't mind causing casualties. This one could have caused huge mayhem," he said."

So this isn't Hezbollah related ??????

In the end Germany can't and won't save Europe.  The sooner the breakup comes the better for all.  Naturally, the Kremlin twins want to show the country strong leaders are needed in times of stress (which they create, of course).  And Israel shows its exasperating restraint by warning the Lebanese goverment that is in thrall to Hezbollah to watch it.  Who knew Kuwait had a functioning government?  And if someone kills more than two dozen in a socialist country he must be insane. As for AA going bankrupt, they say our miles are safe, which is the most important thing.
