Introducing Private Messaging
As The King Prawn was first to notice, we now have private messaging. You can access it by going to another Member's profile page, then clicking on the big blue Send Private Message button.
This is the first in a series of features we'll be rolling out -- in this case, one that Members have specifically asked for -- designed to bring the Ricochet community closer together even as it expands in numbers.
At the same time, we realize that some people want to avoid receiving messages entirely, or avoid receiving certain types of messages. To address this, the ability to globally opt-out should come within a few days. In the meantime, if you get a message from someone you don't care to hear from, you can block them.

Re: Introducing Private Messaging
I'll speak on behalf of the shy and intimidated.
I think the ability to opt out should have been a priority. I don't know Y'alls' numbers, but I'm sure there are a number of Members Who lurk but don't participate. May I introduce Briar Ann as evidence? Read that post and tell Me it didn't take every nerve Briar Ann had to participate?
Some want to contribute, but not exactly participate. Why do Y'all want to throw Them in the deep end?
Then Y'all want to put the onus of "blocking" Members on the possibly shy and intimidated. How comfortable is that for Them?
Good grief.

I'm confused. If someone is lurking but not participating, why would anyone send them a private message? For that matter, how would I find out you even exist if you never post? And what does "contribute, but not exactly participate" mean? What's the difference? I'm as shy and intimidated as the next guy, but let's not overreact here. We've been promised the opt out in a few days. At that point, we retiring types can happily retreat back into our shells.

Re: Introducing Private Messaging
Bravo!
I have not let the absence of such a feature in the past stop me from finding a work around.
I just appreciate not having to go that route in the future.

Re: Introducing Private Messaging
How cool. Thanks for the new toy!
Is there some way to distinguish between active (skin-currently-in-the-game-and-fully-paid-up) and lapsed members? I checked a few profiles of (apparently) former members (Lady Kurobara, eg) and they too have Send Private Message buttons.

As a way of saying thank you, I've updated my hometown in my profile.

Re: Introducing Private Messaging
This sounds like it could be a good thing though I really don't know anybody here. I do feel a mild kinship with Pat Sajak although we've never met. It''s the sort of famiarity one feels from seeing the same face five or six nights a week. I'm sure I'm not alone in that...

Next, can we please have a mobile-friendly version of the site?

I like the opt out feature. It's just like Perry's HPV vaccination plan.

Re: Introducing Private Messaging
Are we going to have to click on "my account" to check if our inbox has a new message? Will there be some alert on the home page to let us know of new messages? Checking "my account" every time would be hard to do and easy to forget.
As a conservative, I may revert to communicating by a more tried-and-true method -- carrier pigeon. But Pseudodionysius would just eat the messenger.

Re: Introducing Private Messaging
Request to all members: don't have good conversations about interesting stuff with people via PM. The PM is meant for stuff like "Yeah let's get together and here's my phone number and directions to my house." My fear with PM is that it will lead to side conversations where great points are made and missed by the 99%.

Re: Introducing Private Messaging
When I send myself a message, I get 2 entries in my Sent list and nothing in my Inbox.
I can't even talk to myself! (Hunh? Wha?)
