Are there any Ricochet members who don't regularly read National Review Online?  Raise your hands.  No, wait... that would be too embarrassing.  Well, just in case anyone missed it, Obama's Road to Nowhere is one of Mark Steyn's best.  And that's really saying something.

Isn't the following just one of the best bits of writing ever?

The American Dream, 2011: You pay four bucks a gallon to commute between your McJob and your underwater housing to prop up a spendaholic, grabafeelic, paramilitarized bureaucracy-without-end bankrupting your future at the rate of a fifth of a billion dollars every hour.

Read it and laugh.  And weep.  And laugh.  And weep...

I postponed reading the column this morning and forgot about it until you posted. Thank you! It is indeed a Steyn classic.

The guy's amazing. His gut reactions are so on target it's uncanny.

BTW, I heard a clip of the Chrysler guys booing (on Charlie Rose?) and thought, "The honeymoon is over when the liberals are no longer suppressing embarrassing moments. "

Steyn is great. I have to say I don't usually read NRO as much as I used to, because it's mostly been taken over by Ricochet. I did finally buy a National Review subscription, but it has yet to arrive.

Steyn just goes into his grab-bag of words ( or he just makes them up) like "grabafeelic", puts them in proper order and there you have it! That's what language and writing is all about!

I feel your pain, Dan.  So, I'm wonderin', do the Ricochet editors have somethin' against cross-postin'?  Or are snooty NRO editors (Jonah Goldberg?) unwilling to share content?

As always, Steyn rocks.  The phrase "breezy insouciance" alone made it worth the read.

Ricochet and NRO are pals. We've cross-posted (as in reproduced entire posts) in the past, and might try it again in the future, but in the meantime, sending folks over to read something great at NRO (and vice versa) seems to be a win-win. Readers get great content, and the sites exchange some traffic.

National Review has actually become a source of great regret for me. After two decades as a subscriber, their always broken digital content password finally could not be inveigled at all to give up the content I had paid for. Having wasted hours coaxing the password beast in the past, I wasted hours again this time but to no avail. So when my subscription lapsed last month, despite my deep adoration for Flo, Mark, Rob, Jonah, Derbyshire and the rest, I finally surrendered to a problem should have been solved a decade ago and spent the money on a second dress for the wife and shoes for the children.

That book is already on my shelf. Love it! The irony is palpable.

Oh, and the Steyn article is flat out brilliant. High dudgeon even by Steyn's stratospheric standards. Thanks.

I too thought that was one of Steyn's best - its the most devastating critique of Obamanomics I've ever seen.

Do you think the Republican nominee can just read this column in the debate with Obama rather than speak him/herself?

Be nice if Steyn appeared in the NYTimes on occasion to show liberals just what trained seals are David Brooks and the other "conservative."

First thing every Saturday morning I rush to the computer to read Mark Steyn on NRO. I went through awful withdrawals during his recent absence.

His columns are always great but this last was especially outstanding. Once in a while I've posted them to facebook but as most of my facebook friends are rabid self-satisfied liberals, I never receive any comments. So now I generally keep Steyn's treasures to myself and a few enlightened others.

Sissyphus -- my son wanted the NRO app for his i-touch and I couldn't access my digital content so I sent them an email. Reply came -- they stopped allowing print subscribers to access the digital domain without a specific digital subscription as of the end of December 2010.

Other Steyn lovers -- I love reading Steyn's stuff out loud to my husband. The only thing I would love more would be if Steyn would record himself reading it and we could click on an audio version of the man himself, mellifluous syllables and odd inflections and lovely, what-is-that-exactly accent and all... Mr. Steyn, are you listening?

It wouldn't surprise me if NRO is devoured by Ricochet is 10 years time..

This, was worth clicking and reading for all on its own:

"This is Main Street, Obamaville: All bumps, no road."

Classic.

Mark is a master craftsman. I first started reading his stuff during the '04 Bush-Kerry election and have been a devoted fan ever since. I've read his books too. His ability to skewer liberals and their nonsense with penetrating analysis and biting wit keeps me going.
