Am I in the pay of Big Oil? I do most sincerely hope so. Christmas is coming and I could use the extra cash. One thing's for sure, if I am being funded by sinister fossil fuel interests I'll soon be found out and exposed.

How so? Because I have attracted the attention of none other than Mr - or should that be Dr? - Hockey Stick himself, Michael Mann. In today's Wall Street Journal, the world-renowned decline-hiding, data-fudging, FOI-breaching climate "scientist" accuses me of being a "denier", a "contrarian" and "silly." This is indeed a badge of honour. Like being accused of "naughtiness" by the Prince of Darkness. But it also has consequences, as we have just learned from the Climategate 2.0 emails.

Here's one Michael Mann wrote in August 2007. It concerns two inconvenient researchers - Steve McIntyre and Doug Keenan - who had the temerity to question the integrity of his work.

I have been talking w/ folks in the states about finding an
investigative journalist to investigate and  expose McIntyre, and his
thusfar unexplored connections with fossil fuel interests.Perhaps the
same needs to be done w/ this Keenan guy.
I believe that the only way to stop these people is by exposing them and
discrediting them.

See what I mean?

Congratulations on making it to the big time, Mr Delingpole.

If you find out how to get that funding, lemme know.

You need to get with the program. Otherwise, Mr. Mann might wield that hockey stick against you.

Why anyone would take any heed to what Mann says is beyond me. In any other branch of science it seems to me he would have been at the very least relegated to a long period in some sort of purgatory for publishing something so profoundly and thoroughly discredited as the "hockey stick" temperature graph.

James, as you like Churchill remember this quote.

Hitler has said "We will wring England's neck like a chicken"

And Churchill responds "Some Chicken Some Neck"

James tell the bastard to put his hockey stick where the Solar Energy don't shine.

How would that idiot know what someone else said on Ricochet or any other believable source of information ? Did someone " have a little talk"  with him ? Straighten out one bent scientist, run down some dodgy data and the next thing you know - WSJ !

What's up with that ?

Nice little research project you've got going there, Mr. Keenan.  Be a shame if something were to happen to it...

"We've got to expose these people and discredit them."  Irony can just be so damn ironic sometimes.

The WSJ published a piece by Mr. Delingpole. (see here) The Mann letter was in response to it.

This is why I am not a lefty.  Reason, truth and logic has nothing to do with it.  Perception is everything.  And Big Oil is the Emmanuel Golstein du jour.

Yeah, finding problems with their data, their methodology, or their conclusions is just so time-consuming.  It's far better to hide one's own data, refuse to release one's own methodology, and modify one's own conclusions when they become inconvenient, all while having lackies launch ad hominen attacks.

Because that is how science is done.

If it shakes out that global warming is absolutely not happening or if it turns out to be a natural cycle we just have to ride out, Michael Mann and his ilk should be publicly shamed and ostracized until they are sufficiently penitent. If it turns out it is anthropogenic and we should be taking steps, they'll have to be drawn and quartered for shenanigans that put the issue in doubt. I don't see an up side to their future.

Actually SL, what you are suggesting is exactly why the root of their hypothesis is pure wishful thinking.  We wish that we could take steps.  We wish it was all due to our over indulgence.  What we don't want to hear is the truth that climate change is out of our control one way or the other.  It takes a great deal of maturity to accept whatever (if you'll excuse me) Gd has in store for us.  In the movie "The Right Stuff" Chuck Yeager is asked the difference between the Chimp and the Man since physologically they are so similar.  Chuck says the Chimp doesn't have a clue what's going on but the man knows he's on top of a rocket that could explode and kill him at any moment.  That's the difference.  That's why it takes "The Right Stuff"

Some of them can be quite unpleasant. God bless you and your family, and keep you all safe.

On the plus side, the CAGW war is almost over; I'd imagine that violence that might have been directed Delingpole-wards might now be directed at bankers, lawyers, motor journalists (still!) and other people more directly in the path of union hatred.
