At a Hollywood fundraiser last month at the home of producer James Lassiter, President Obama warned donors that "this election will not be as sexy as the first one."

If a sexy campaign is what Obama pines for, he need look no further than the ads that Putin's United Russia Party are pumping out for a little inspiration.  With a slogan of "Let's do it together," Politico's Ben Smith notes that the ad "conflates voting and sex in a way that makes no sense but has great production values and a compelling beat."

I guess if the elections are just a show you might as well just give people some proper entertainment...or perhaps the message is more subtle than we think...

All these absurdities emanating from Russian politics seem comical from afar, akin to Kim Jong-il's antics, but it is dangerously foolish to allow such nonsense to give us a sanguine view of what is occurring there. Our good ex-KGB Prime Minister of Russia is as ruthless a machiavellian as any of the Soviet leaders that proceeded him. We laugh easily but Putin's laughter has a bite and we are paying for it.
