Lovely, Claire. Thank you.
I'm betraying my ignorance here, but what is she playing? Is that a piece by your grandfather?

Re: In Memoriam
Thanks so much, Claire.
Although not a teacher of music, my mother was classically trained at the piano and virtually every day growing up we were treated to Chopin, Debussy, Mozart, Czerny, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Jerome Kern and Gershwin. Unlike some women, and I dare say some men, who play somewhat timidly my mother's technique was more forceful, akin to say Martha Argerich. I never tired of listening to her. She no longer plays so much anymore because of the arthritis in her hands and though she is still a feisty Scots woman with a keen wit and always up on politics she may not be around too much longer.
Like your grandmother's music, I'm sure, my mom's music will remain playing in my memory and I'm quite sure I may get a tad misty eyed in the years to come when I hear Claire de Lune or Rhapsody in Blue because the memories of such a happy childhood will immediately come rushing back to me.
You were and are so fortunate. God Bless.

Re: In Memoriam
Lovely. My wife's parents intended her to be a classical pianist in Russia. But her teacher told her that, though she was a great talent, there was only room for one or two in the Soviet Union - and they would come out of Leningrad or Moscow, not Siberia.
So she chose to use her talented hands for medicine instead.
To this day, I haven't heard her play the piano.

Re: In Memoriam
Thanks for sharing that video, Claire. I'm reminded of my mother, who also enjoys playing the piano. When I was younger and still living with my parents, my mom would play the piano for about half an hour every late afternoon. While she did so, our cat - a Japanese Bobtail we named Woody - would lie down and curl up on the floor next to the piano, as if relaxed by the music.

Thanks for sharing Claire !
Isn't it nice when we have a special photo, recording or film of a loved one who is past? They may be gone, but a piece of them endures. That was wonderful!
Re: In Memoriam
How gracefully she plays,....her hands seem to float above the keys. Just Beautiful. "You get it, don't you?" she asks. Yes ma'am, I do. Thank you.

Re: In Memoriam
Very nice, Claire. You are so fortunate to have that, and probably other, videos. I can see that you are indeed cherishing these sacred memories, kept ever vivid by them. Thanks for sharing.

Re: In Memoriam
That's really awesome. I agree, it's a fortunate thing to have that video. I watched it and thought of my daughter, who is a budding young pianist. Maybe one day her granddaughter will have a video of her playing the piano so well.

Re: In Memoriam
I agree with Dave... very graceful playing. Thanks.
Tommy asked in another thread about singing while playing something complex. What your grandma is doing, talking while playing, is infinitely more difficult because her words are spontaneous.
It's truly a gift to have photos and videos of one's family.

Lovely. I agree with Dave and I would add: her playing and commentary truly illuminate the music. If I had just heard the piece on a recording or in concert, I'm sure I wouldn't have noticed what was going on in that piece--I'm not musically trained--but now I can hear it. Thank you for passing on that gift to us.

"Majestic, calm, steady. You get it, don't you?"
Claire, you do get it. She must have delighted in you.

Re: In Memoriam
Priceless Claire. Reminds me of my grandmother, not musically gifted, but left a lasting impression on me, taught me to read and enjoy. She ran a cafe, had a lot of hard knocks, and never knew her to be religious, ever saw her with a Bible, but after her death we found her Bible, all marked up with notes...She and her Lord spent lots of time together. She opened cafe at 3 AM did all the cooking, and closed at 11 PM. She set an example for all to see.

Re: In Memoriam
What a wonderful memory. My mom and sister played the piano all the time, also, while I was growing up. And my brother is a classical guitarist who studied under Angel Romero. I, however, studied the piano for ten years and am lucky to find middle C. I didn't think about it until now, but how sad that my children don't hear the piano played in the house while they grow up. I didn't think of that. :-(

A pennywhistle's cheaper and doesn't take up half a room.
And what kid doesn't love a kazoo?
