...which would you pick?

Assume, for the sake of the argument, that the show would be approved by a network, and that it would be redone well, by someone of Rob Long's ability, as opposed to some of the remake flops we've seen.

Also, no re-imaginings. Continuations of the existing story are OK, though.

My top 3:

  1. Hogan's Heroes -- Shows our armed forces in a good light, beating the Nazis with cleverness and humor.
  2. Mission: Impossible -- I know it was redone once, but I absolutely love the concept and the fact that they did a fair-to-middling job of surprising viewers at least once (you knew something was going to go wrong, but never really knew what, nor how they were going to get past it).
  3. M*A*S*H -- Just get rid of the preachy episodes and the leftist slant (gentle though it was).

Your turn!

There were some fun episodes in the later seasons... like the one where they went through all four seasons with the camp, including the baseball playoffs (which Charles lost a lot of money on).

it seems a remake of a good/popular show from the past would need to be something of a re-imagining, otherwise what's the point?

Well, a little re-imagining is okay, but I don't like what they did to Battlestar Galactica.

Seasons 2-9 of the Simpsons - everything they have produced in the last 8 years is dead to me, so I consider this ripe to bring back.

And beautifully, there is no need to re-imagine anything.  Just bring back the old people and spirit and let it unfold by itself (of course, it is precisely that magical wit that can't be brought back, so oh well).

I think it's almost always a mistake to bring back a popular classic tv show.

I think it's a MUCH better idea to bring back classic shows that weren't so popular, or if they were popular they look ridiculous in hindsight.

Example: Battlestar Galactica

In that vein, I submit that the following shows could be redone very well with the right writers and actors:

Diffrent Strokes.  Except this time 2 poor yet incredibly adorable redneck kids are adopted by an affluent black man with a hot daughter.

I think a remake of Family Ties would still be relevent.   This time you could have a progressive lesbian couple with a conservative son and 2 daughters.  One Daughter's smokin hot and the other that leaves you wondering why she's even on there and why they haven't written her out of the show.

Mendel: Indeed the early Simpsons was probably the height of funny. I also loved Futurama, and as I watched it I thought it was getting only better and better. It's final episode is probably one of my favorite 30 minutes of television ever. They brought back the old cast and I think many of the writers, but the new seasons just are not the same. You can't restart the funny, it just has to flow.

As for shows that could use a reboot in modern times.

I think the A-Team would be awesome. I really enjoyed the Movie. Sure it was dumb but it was fun...and that is what the A-Team is supposed to be.

I also think the Saint would be a great choice, too. Most people I think have forgotten about it and the movie from the 90's was a flop.

I tried watching the older version of Battlestar Galactica recently - it was painful.  I don't want to hijack this thread with the new BSG, but --so sorry--it was superior in every possible way.

Now to address the pertinent question:

1. The Beverly Hillbillies - Expertly skewers modern cultural pretentions

2. Firefly - Best writers EVER

3. Superman (as a 1930's period piece)

Sure Battlestar Galactica looked good, but it was such a let down to by the end. By the final episode I was convinced the writers had written themselves into a hole in the first 3 seasons.

Norman Lear tried something like that when he did his remake/sequel of All In The Family, called 704 Hauser.

It was not received well.

  1. Hawaii Five-O.  Bryan Cranston as McGarrett.  The recent remake attempt was awful.
  2. Wild Wild West.  Jim Caviezel and Jack Black.  (Caviezel is currently starring in a series, Person Of Interest, which is essentially a remake of another of my favorite series, Search, starring Hugh O'Brian.)
  3. Laugh-In.  Don't laugh.  With fast-paced, topical humor; cameos; and clever use of social media--without the slapstick and corn of the original--it could be a hit.
  4. The Time TunnelQuantum Leap was a semi-remake.
  5. The Twilight Zone.  Anthology series are great.  Why not remake the king of them all?  Wouldn't every popular director, screenwriter, and actor love to take a crack at a half-hour of TZ?

Yes, the way they finished the original series was clearly superior.

I'd like to see the sci-fi channel remake of Battlestar Galactica redone by someone who understands what their job actually is- providing entertainment, not political commentary.

Special note to Ron Moore: If you want to send a message call Western Union. Or use email. But don't destroy a potentially huge franchise because you oppose the Iraq war, and sympathize with suicide bombers.

What he did was a travesty. It was as if Gene Roddenberry had decided to ground the USS Enterprise and devote the crew to ending the Vietnam War through a series of hamheaded stories that had approximately nothing to do with the original premise of the show.

THE Ron Moore THE.

That's a Simpsons joke from decades ago, which is when I last watched.

Yeah...ok.

This will date me,but listening to theme song as Julie London finished her set in a smoky lounge made Peter Gunn one of the coolest shows around. And the guys on 77 Sunset Strip were pretty cool too, even Cookie Brynes as a valet.

Car 54 ,Where Are You ? The Phil Silvers Show

The Rifleman , Combat , Naked City , The Millionaire , Burke's Law, The Bob Cummings Show was  a long time ago, but it was just cool.

I am using the term "cool" way too much, but as a young boy these things struck me exactly as that,  adults at play were very attractive. Adults in action responding to conflict, chaos, and choices.

Probably why most tv sucks so badly today, other than the opus works like Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc.

Touché.

I must admit, that was really hard to swallow.  I rarely have to work so hard to suspend my disbelief (and disgust.)
