Switched open Facebook to discover that the pro-Obama contingent thinks this Andrew Sullivan post is super awesome and right on.  Here's the excerpt that folks seem to find especially compelling:

If you'd told me in January 2009 that the banks would pay us back the entire bailout and then some, that the auto companies would actually turn around with government help and be a major engine of recovery, that there would be continuous job growth since 2009, however insufficient, after the worst demand collapse since the 1930s, that bin Laden would be dead, Egypt transitioning to democracy, al Qaeda all but decimated as a global threat, and civil rights for gays expanding more rapidly than at any time in history ... well I would be expecting a triumphant re-election campaign.

So you see, the problem is not with the President's governing.  It's just a messaging problem.  If only more people understood all the great things he's done...

What Andrew Sullivan really means to say is that he is glad the Obama administration let him off on the marijuana charge.

Even Obama isn't tin eared enough to run a triumphalist campaign centered on the economy. In fact, I didn't think anyone was.

Andrew Sullivan should talk to somebody, somewhere, sometime.

Fantastic. Keep telling Americans they're too stupid to know how lucky they are to have Obama and his only prophet, Andrew Sullivan, whether they're under-employed or not, and I'm sure they'll come around to this point of view!

Of course it is, it always is. Messaging, communicating, spinning and on and on and on; it is never the message, no it is always just how that message is presented. How could it be otherwise?

If your beliefs are anchored to the notion that those on the right are merely too stupid/evil to accept all the good you have done what other conclusion could you reach? I should be offended but at this point it is merely tiresome.

If you had told me that we made it January of 2009 without another 9/11, or that Bush's bailout would have been repaid, that Iraq would have been mostly stable by the time he left office ... my God, Bush would have been ranked #1 all time!

It all depends on how you look at things.

Does anyone read Mr Sullivan any more? - I lost him at Sarah Palin's, um, oh, never mind.

The collapse of the labor force just sailed right over his head, didn't it? That 9.1 does not include millions that have given up, Andrew. But the facts were never your long suit.

well I would be expecting a triumphant re-election campaign.

And that, sir, is why you are not a successful political strategist.  Or even pundit.

Where is ObamaCare in this list? Where is the spending and growth of government. Where is Andrew Sullivan?

Did Sullivan or one of his ghost bloggers write that?

Insanity is repeating the same experiment, expecting different results. In this case, the students are smarter than the Prof.

Save we are locked some hideous classroom trying transfer out of class and graduate.  Even the councilors are in lockstep with the University.

What message this time, then? "Hope" is slipping away. "Change" happened and no one liked it. How do you convey to the public that you know what's good for them even though no one wants what you've already done?

Let's see, they can't trot out the "but we're not finished" line. No one is buying that and most people hope they are finished. Similarly, "stay the course" is something that won't be popular.

The only alternative I can see is fear mongering. It's going to be ugly. Actually, it already is.

As I recall, the President made a similar claim after the major losses in the 2010 elections.  His analysis was the Democratic losses were the result of him not having put his message out enough.  It couldn't possibly be because people were disagreeing with those policies.

That's kinda what I was thinking also.  Well actually, I was thinking its obvious Andrew is still getting high.

  • banks would pay us back the entire bailout and then some / Why not? That was the deal.
  • that the auto companies would actually turn around with government help / Why not? That was the deal.
  • and be a major engine of recovery/ 1 Lie. Not an engine. / 2 Lie. No recovery.
  • that there would be continuous job growth since 2009 / Lie. Active workforce smaller today.
  • however insufficient, after the worst demand collapse since the 1930s / Lie. Since Carter.
  • that bin Laden would be dead / Why not? Continuation of Bush policy.
  • Egypt transitioning to democracy / Lie. Transfer of power from friendly military despot to military leaning towards Mohammedan caliphate.
  • al Qaeda all but decimated as a global threat / Why not? Continuation of Bush policy.
  • and civil rights for gays expanding more rapidly than at any time in history /Why not? Democrats controlled Congree for first two years.
  • ... well I would be expecting a triumphant re-election campaign / Why? Congress extended in 2010 Bush’s tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires.

His surprise stems from the assumption that Democrats do not honor their promises.

"civil rights for gays expanding more rapidly than at any time in history"

This is Sullivan's central concern.  He listed the other pseudo-accomplishments so that this one wouldn't seem so lonely.
