By now most of you know that I live in Istanbul, but it occurred to me this morning that I'm not sure where most of our members live. Are there other expatriates among us? Outstripp, you're in Japan, right? I know we have a lot of Californians. Where do the rest of you live? Did you grow up there? If you moved there, why? Do you like it there?

Local flora and fauna? Favorite local pastime? Are your neighbors friendly? Do you think you'll stay there?

Is there some place you'd rather live? Where?

The photos are places I've lived. I don't think I've written about either place. Does anyone recognize them?

I live in the People's Republic of New York City as of right now, but I'm going on active duty and I have a choice between Arizona (flight school) or North Carolina (special forces). Any suggestions?

To be honest, the titles of the photos served as useful hints!

Democratic Republic of Illinois, near Chicago. Had a front row seat for the implosion of Alan Keyes and the rise of The Obama. Grew up outside of Philadelphia, got here via Dayton Ohio and Houston, Texas.

I'd rather be living in southern Indiana. Somewhere a couple hundred miles south and outside of Illinois which is following California off the fiscal cliff.

They're both beautiful states. As for Special Forces versus flight school ... that seems like the kind of highly personal choice that would really depend on your temperament.

Amazing, isn't it, how many little "People's Republics of..." we have represented here!

Count me in: The People's Republic of Del Mar, California, ruled by the Gang of 60, many of whom are professors at UCSD and bought their beach houses here in the 70s.

My heart, however, is in the high country of Colorado (where I have lived) and in New Mexico (where we visit family/friends a lot.)

My dad was a Navy officer.  I was born in Honolulu, then we went to Carmel CA (Naval postgraduate school), followed by Key West (when it was a submarine base, not a gay vacation destination).  Dad did his last five tours at various assignments in Washington, DC, so I did most of my growing up  in McLean, VA.  Mom and Dad are still there.  I moved to CT in my early twenties, half-way between home and then-boyfriend.  There were a few years back in DC, then NYC, and finally back to CT after marriage (wen it was time to start a family).  I've been in this house for seventeen years (next week), and it's about fifteen minutes from Ursula's house.  We're here because my husband is an investment baker, working in NYC. Connecticut is fine, but I don't see myself here exclusively forever.  I love the SW desert, Palm Springs area is great, but suffers from being part of California.  AZ is also great, and ~Paules highly recommends Santa Fe, which I will visit sometime.  We really love Hawaii, but it is just so far from everything/one/where else.

Michael, how exciting!  But I will miss seeing you at Rico-soirees.  Both places are great, but VERY different.  If you like having four seasons go to NC.  It's a lot like this area, but not as cold.  The AZ desert is fantastic, but it gets ridiculously hot in the summer.  My friends that live there say one adjusts.  In the end, though, make the decision based on what career path suits you.  Both are terrific.  Keep in touch!

I live in a little town in the northwest corner of Washington state.  It's frankly the most beautiful place I've ever lived.  We have the Cascade Mountains just to the east, and the Puget Sound to the west.  If I get up early, I can literally be packing around in the mountains in the morning, and out crabbing on the sound in the afternoon.  As far as flora, we have lots of green stuff.  It's green all the time.  In terms of agriculture blackberries, blue berries, strawberries, and raspberries are grown here.  As for fauna we have nothing here that you need to be worried about eating you, which is nice.  Of course out on the water you can see porpoises, orcas, and occasionally gray whales.  Someone told me they saw a great white out in Puget Sound, but I don't believe it.  On land there are lots of black tail deer, and cougar and bear can be found in the mountains.  For fun people go boating in the summer and skiing in the winter.  The weather is temperate most of the year, so you can just about anything.  I've run out of words...dangit

I think you need to look at the bigger picture.

As Claire said, the career choice is a very personal one, and I would not presume to advise you.

But I do know that if you have had respiratory problems (asthma, allergies, persistent bronchitis or sinusitus...) or a family history of respiratory problems, you may find the drier, relatively allergy-free air of the American Southwest much easier to cope with than the humid, moldy (not a slur -- it's literally moldy) air of the Southeast.

My husband and I cannot move to the Southwest yet -- but we plan to. Partly for my health, but also because it is so drop-dead gorgeous out there.

Currently in inner city Melbourne Australia, complete with a Greens MP, (it resulted from a preference deal).  Prior to that London WC1, UK, (Berkshire for a bit), and Melbourne again.

At first, I though that was a picture of the Bay of Naples, but it is appears to be labelled somewhat differently.

Here is where I live somewhere between two beautiful parks on a Elm-lined boulevard (Third gum tree on the right with the galahs and snakes). A few kms north lies the Turkish community enclave, where I frequently over-indulge in too much food.

Happily relocate to Venice in an instant, or Rome (missed out on work assignment to there).

Michael, what an exciting choice.  First, I would scrap location as a factor in making your decision.  Your city will be temporary.  I'm guessing since you're Army you are looking at flying helos??  I will do my best to remove my bias, because, of course, I would say aviation. :-)  Your lifestyle would be very different between your two choices.  Special Forces is a very painful life and you would be gone a lot.  Life is easier with helos, but there aren't very many practical jobs for helo pilots if you left the service.  With Special Forces you could at least go into security or the police force.  Fixed wing aviation would, probably, give you the best future choices after service if that's one of your considerations.

But, if you really can't resist shooting things and blowing things up then hanging out with the Rangers would be fun.  Good luck and keep us posted.

I was mesmerized by the description until I remembered that I've lived in the Pacific Northwest and it just never stops raining. It's as beautiful as he says though, otherwise.

Dadnabbit, Aodhan beat me to it!

Claire, for an undercover agent, you're remarkably careless to leave the labels on these pictures where anyone who clicks can see them during a contest.

(To be fair to myself, though, before I clicked I had guessed the picture on the left was a Swiss lake of some kind.)
