bw bar

I love this place.

Israel has now married the activities of convivial imbibing and intellectual pursuit. The hottest bars in Tel Aviv are offering late-night science lectures, and they're packing 'em in.

Organizer Yivsam Azgad of the Weizmann Institute of Science says that when he initially took the idea -- already successful in Rehovot -- to the metropolis, "bar owners were reluctant to give away their establishment on Thursday nights. There were those who told me 'you don't know bars in Tel Aviv, they're loud, people drink and make out, how would the lecturer feel?'"

But they're a huge hit. Late-night lectures are now taking place in 40 bars across Tel Aviv, "including some of the biggest and most successful in the city, with another 50-venue project in the works. 'Now we're at a place where lecturers are offended for not being invited to teach,' Azgad said."

L'chaim!

Sounds cool. I've had a similar practice. When I'm at home I'll usually catch up on podcasts while I'm playing a videogame and sipping on something. I think its a good way to start a conversation. I'm not much interested in sports (and don't know much about), and science is (potentially) less toxic a conversation than politics.

Portland, Oregon, has had Science Pub for about five years.  It is sponsored by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and held in various establishments owned by the McMennimans chain.  It has been successful enough to spread to other cities in Oregon.  We also have History Pub, sponsored by the Oregon Historical Society.

That is so cool! I had no idea - too bad the idea caught on after my Tel Aviv pub-hopping days ended.

What is it with the Jewish thirst for knowledge? Now paired with alcohol?

This is a fabulous concept. In the interest of credit where credit is due, Catholics have been using the concept of bringing interesting speakers to pubs since 1981 in the Theology on Tap series begun in Illinois. It has spread to other diocese and other countries. NYC has fun series, attracting 300+ people this past fall to hear Archbishop Timothy Dolan talk about the Virgin Mary.

This is something I would love to attend and I am now sitting here thinking "how could I get some version of this in my city?"

You're probably right. That's where that very cold martini comes in.

I've always wondered how to pronounce "Sláinte". Thank you!

Am I the only one who sees a conflict of interest inherent in commingling an activity whose effect is to eradicate brain cells and the memories contained therein with an activity designed to increase the participant's core knowledge?  Oh well, this bar sounds a natural fit for Huntsville, Alabama.
