I Was Wrong
That was the biggest demonstration I've ever seen in Istanbul. It was definitely something of a scale completely beyond the usual protests. I didn't see the stone throwing, but I saw the size of the protests as I was driving up the street, and Frederike's estimate of the size of the crowd seems about right to me.

Verdict: The weather has nothing to do with history.

Tell that to Napoleon.
Re: I Was Wrong
Okay, okay. Point taken. Let me rephrase: A dark, miserable day that does not meet my expectations of "springtime" seems to be less critical to the course of history than, say, invading Russia in the winter.

Re: I Was Wrong
Have you considered that a dark, gray, overcast day in spring might be CONDUCIVE to massive protests? First, people who might have taken the opportunity of a fine spring day to do something else may have decided that a demo was the best use of a gray day. Second, protesting can be a hot and sweaty business, so cooler weather may have helped the crowd keep up its energy instead of overheating and succumbing to thirst.
