Well, I spoke too soon about Obama doing something right.

River: I trust you aren't getting your hopes up, Claire. In the next 24 hours he'll very likely "clarify" his statement.

"Let me be perfectly clear. I didn't mean to imply that....."

His main job on earth is to sow chaos, confusion, and strife in the world. He never misses an opportunity to do that. · Aug 16 at 6:02am

Your prediction was 100 percent on the mark, River.

The White House denied a report Monday that the U.S. has threatened Turkey with potentially withholding future arms sales because of its tougher stance towards Israel and vote against U.N. Iran sanctions.

Obama “emphatically denied” a Financial Times story saying the president had told Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that future arms sales would be contingent on softening his anti-Israel talk, White House pool reporter Jonathan Weisman of The Wall Street Journal writes.

Unbelievable. Just unbelievable.

Claire - perhaps Obama is just trying to use Turknology Correct (TC) speech. He doesn't really mean it, he just feels that it would be politically expedient right now!

Recalling one of my past comments on another post, Obama makes Charlie Crist look like a man of stern conviction.

It's like a line from Casablanca... "Write-up the usual retractions."

I wonder if the White House writers save effort by preparing Obama's statements and retractions together. Perhaps they can make it easier for everyone by just stacking them together in the teleprompter. The President can express his strong feelings and then, after a pause for a sip of water, immediately retract (or "clarify") what he said just before. Much more efficient, eh?

Claire, I genuinely wish I was wrong about him, as the consequences of his serpentine manipulations, his mendacity, and constant, twisted use of 'straw man' arguments are dire.

We seem to be living a kind of nightmare scenario in which most people don't seem to notice his behavior. As the old saying goes, "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt."

Obama is the very embodiment of our shallow, deluded, anxiety-ridden, soul-less, and expendable age.

Here's a prophetic story: Margaret Thatcher sent an Episcopalian minister to Northern Ireland years ago to try and work out a peace treaty with the IRA. The minister, after sitting through a virulently ant-British tirade from Iain Paisley, the IRA's representative, said, "But Mr. Paisley, surely we're all the children of God, are we not?"

Paisley replied, "No, sir, we are not! We are the children of wrath!"
We are witnessing The Wrath, delivered through our generation, don't you think?

Claire, I'm interested in your opinion: what is Turkey's strategic value to the United States?

I'm too late for the conspiracy theory thread, but... what if the say-it-then-retract-it dance is actually some kind of coldly calculating diplomacy? The Administration says one thing, then releases a statement walking it back... and simply trusts the media to separately "market" the correct statement to the necessary parties?

It would be a novel way to fence-sit on any thorny topic, and costs less than actually taking a stand on anything.

And how are the Turkish people to understand this?
