During our podcast earlier this week, I compared the constitution of Texas, which provides for a relatively weak governor, with that of New Hampshire, which (I said) provides for a strong one.  That prompted two emails from Ricochet reader Yehoshua Jason Bedrick.  Here's the first:

One quick correction re: your latest Ricochet podcast: You said that the Texas governor is weaker than, say, the NH governor. Actually, the NH governor is probably the weakest in the nation. He needs three of the five Executive Councilors to agree for him to do anything from appointments to contracts. People joke that he can't use the bathroom without a majority of helge Council agreeing. With five Republicans in the Council, our Democratic governor is having a rough time.
As an aside, I'd love to join Ricochet but between raising two kids, finishing my graduate degree and working part-time at a think tank, I'm terrified that I'd become addicted. Only a matter of time, I guess, since Rob's weekly pitch is wearing me down as I listen while doing laundry and dishes every Friday.

Yehoshua was entirely correct, of course--and I knew better.  When I said "New Hampshire" I meant "Alaska."  (Quite what degradation of neurons and synapses lead my brain--or at least my mouth--to misfire in quite the way it did I leave to better minds than mine.)  But I'm glad I made that mistake. A couple of hours after sending me that first email, you see, Yehoshua sent this one:

I just signed up for Ricochet!

Welcome to Ricochet, Yehoshua!  (And congratulations, Rob.  That guilt thing really works.)

You do realize, Peter, that if you were Michelle Bachmann, you would be decried as an imbecile, mocked on every known political talk show, including but not limited to Jon Stewart and otherwise dismissed.

So you can feel good about that.

Peter, your subtle genius for signing up new members is staggering (and a little frightening). Now apply this other-worldly ability to force Ryan enter the presidential race, please, and your work here will be done.

Heh, no conspiracy here. They'll be back, but we have some technical issues to chase down before I can start writing them again.

It gets worse.  Over the comment thread on the podcast itself, a member of the Ricochetoise pointed out that I called Texas the fourth biggest state in the country. And so it was, by population, back when I learned the table of states--in high school, when the most recent census was that of 1970.

Today?  Texas ranks second.

So that's three mistakes.

Excuse me while I take an aspirin and turn in early.

Peter, your point is Sarah Palin rose in power to something equivalent to a Caesar.  So, If she had held power another two years, she might have annexed Serbia and then picked off British Columbia for her winter villa.  And there are squishes who claim she has no executive experience.  Well, in order for her to have gotten normal executive experience,  she would have had to give up several magnitudes of power - which would have then put her in the same category of those weakling governors over at MA.  Is that a fair summary of your post?

OK, so she would annex Siberia and not Serbia, which would then give us 57 states plus or minus a couple.  This New Hampshire thing is spreading.  You say Siberia and I say Serbia but we all  know that it means that prime acreage just a little to the west of Alaska :-)
