Wandering the hallways of the Hoover Institution just now, I happened to run into former secretaries of state George Shultz and Condoleezza Rice and economist John Cogan, who were just leaving Sec. Shultz's conference room with Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown.  (This wasn't as startling as it might sound.  Officials are always stopping by to pick the brains of Hoover fellows.)

The following exchange then took place:

Sec. Shultz:  Scott, meet Peter Robinson.

Sec. Shultz (continuing, and chuckling, as Sen. Brown shakes my hand):  Peter wrote Ronald Reagan's "tear down this wall" speech.  He's been coasting ever since.

Sen. Brown:  That's okay.  Havlicek stole the ball.

Scott Brown.  My kind of guy.

Raise your hand (hand raised) if you get Scott Brown's reference to Havlicek.  Nice story, Peter.

Beautiful.

But I will say that Havlicek, like you Peter, was a great contributor after the huge moment.

For the rest of his career, Havlicek would run you out of the gym.  His lungs could not fit in a standard xray machine.

I was about to joke that he's the first senator of color from the state of Massachusetts, but my geek sense tingled and upon a Google search I learned that that honor belongs to another Republican.

Great story.

On another subject.  When are you going to have Ann Coulter on Uncommon Knowledge?

Miss Coulter may, very well offer transcendent conversation, in the unhurried, civil, thoughtful, and informed atmosphere that Uncommon Knowledge provides.

In addition Miss Coulter has a new book due out in October (her ninth).

"Hoover Fellow Peter Robinson, tear down this wall between Uncommon Knowledge and Ann Coulter and stop coasting!"

Senator Brown provided the passing vote for Dodd-Frank, a piece of legislation so transcendently destructive and stupid that it only avoids its full, deserved ration of contempt by virtue of Obamacare's even greater toxicity.  I am sure he is very charming, though.

Daniel Frank: Senator Brown provided the passing vote for Dodd-Frank,

Did he?

Dodd-Frank was signed into law in July of 2010.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought Scott Brown wasn't elected until November of 2010.

nope...won special election in January to fill out Ted Kennedy's term.  Was supposed to provide filibuster protection against Obamacare...instead the House simply passed the Senate version rather than risking a conference committee version of the bill.

Brown was not the only Pubbie fooled by Dodd-Frank...the Maine girls were there also.   It's not easy being a Republican senator in the People's Republic of New England.  There aren't many Republicans there, period.

I used to be one - New Hampshire - but like so many others, I migrated south to where the jobs are.

Correct, and it is silly trying to hold them to ideological, and voting standards, of Reagan conservatives while working with cards they are dealt. I for one believe that getting people in Massachusetts to vote Republican in a national election is a gigantic first step on which to build. It must be protected.

But, geez! Couldn't he have decided to go all RINO-squish on something that doesn't matter quite as much? Seems like a pretty serious lapse.

Hey, next thing you know, Peter will even vote for Romney (who kept the 85% Dem legislature from passing a single payer health program)!

And, Alfredo Delgado, Sen. Brooke was Barbara Wawa's boy friend as well.

Imagine predicting that 60 or 70 years ago. You'd have been laughed out of the Hahvud club.

Of course you'd have been pummeled in the South if you'd suggested it would go Republican.
