Hummus Debate Spreads
I'm not sure they really believe it's news, or just wanted to use the headline, but Inside Higher Ed has a story this morning about a growing boycott of Israeli hummus in Ivy League dining halls and a student referendum on the matter taking place at Princeton. Lest you thought the Tea Party revolution had stretched that far...
Money quote:
If the measure does pass, that doesn’t necessarily mean Sabra’s competitors should start lining up to be the next face of hummus at Princeton. University spokeswoman Emily Aronson said dining officials would consider the hummus preferences of all stakeholders – faculty and staff as well – not just students.
“Dining services will continue to keep the dialogue open with the students in the [Princeton Committee on Palestine], though given that student voting on the referendum has not yet closed, it would be premature to say at this point what the outcome and next steps may be,” Aronson wrote in an e-mail.
I should note that on Facebook the pro-Sabra "Save the Hummus" forces have gathered 2,600 members versus the 181 signed up for "Boycott Sabra." Of course we don't know where all the Facebook members went to school.

Darn it! I've had enough of this Israel bashing.
I'm gonna start a boycott of all the Palestinian stuff we consume, like....um...like....
Come to think of it, they don't actually produce anything, unless you count those cute little faux suicide bomb vests their children wear on festive occasions.

Those conniving Jews, making delicious food to undermine our moral fiber. What will they think of next; computers and advanced medical devices probably.

Oh, the Ivy league. Turgid with bureaucracy, they're far more concerned with the optics of hummus subsidies than, say, a few million dollars being snatched from right under their noses.

As stupid as this boycott is, I'm afraid I have to respectfully disagree with XTY. Hummus is terrible.
What's that? You've got a tasteless, grainy paste? Happen to have any bitter, soggy crackers to go with that?

Those insidiously clever Palestinians, foiling our every attempt to boycott them, by not actually making anything in the first place.

Oh you guys, come on! Hummus is great! And Sabra Hummus is the best widely available, mass-produced hummus ever! I love the stuff. Try the spicy stuff, or the garlic or the olive or the .....

GET TO DA HUMMUS!!
I've always liked Sabra hummus, especially the spicy and roasted red pepper varieties. Getting to annoy Ivy Leaguers is now icing on the cake. My brand loyalty is complete!

But at least hummus is high in dietary fiber.
And Sabra brand is the best commercial hummus I've ever tried by far. In fact, I have never had a bad Sabra product.
For those of you whose only experience with hummus is as a dry, grainy paste, have you ever tried Sabra hummus? Because before Sabra, I felt the same way about hummus. But Sabra hummus is smooth, creamy, rich, salty, garlicky goodness. Yum!
Go Sabra and Go Mediterranean! (An advertising slogan I actually know, for a change.)

Very true. You know it's good when you see the olive oil pooling on the surface. It may be vegetarian, but it sure ain't low-fat.
And, for shame, Paleologus: your namesakes practically invented the stuff.

Touche. Truthfully, I'm no huge fan of baby octopi or squid dressed in their own ink, either. Give me dishes the Varangian Guard would have favored, prepped and seasoned in a Byzantine, Turk, North African, Italian, Caribbean, Indian, etc. fashion and I'm a happy guy.
Can't say Midge. I don't recall which brands I've tried. My sister pushes the stuff on me about twice a year. I taste, add lemon juice, paprika, & garlic, try again & add more, with salt. Pretty soon I'm reaching for Sriracha. Anyway, some of the stuff I've tried has been from relatively high quality Middle Eastern restaurants, in Michigan we have a chunk of those.
Btw, thanks to the great George Washington Carver, there are now much better legume pastes than hummus. But, next time I visit my sister, I'll bring her some Sabra brand stuff.

Well, that might be your problem right there.
Sisters are notorious for trying to feed their brothers "healthy hummus" -- hummus short on all the things that make it good, like enough tahini (plenty of sesame fat), oil, and salt... and maybe she skimps on the garlic because she doesn't want to give you garlic breath.
Also, for some reason "healthy hummus" tends to have a chunkier, grittier texture -- as if there's something "unhealthy" about pureeing your hummus so it's smooth. But hummus that isn't smooth isn't "healthy", it's just rustic.
PS: Since it sounds like you like heat, I recommend Sabra's "Supremely Spicy Hummus" (it comes with a hot pepper paste -- harissa or something -- in the middle). "Hummus Abu-Goush" is tasty with pine nuts, but not hot, and their roasted red pepper and roasted garlic ones are also good, though also not hot. I dislike their "Luscious Lemon Hummus", but I'm not a fan of any lemon-flavored hummus -- if I had to eat lemon hummus, I suppose I'd pick their brand.

Personally, I love hummus. They've got terrific style sense, basically created the modern theater, and are often witty conversationalists, and I say if they want to get married, they should be allowed to get married. But then I'm a squish.

I appreciate the suggestions; I'll take a look-see. Maybe I'll find my hummus wheelhouse. But I doubt it.
To put things in perspective, sis and I were debating short-rib techniques the other night. Mine's better, but the lass shows promise. She's certainly not trying to push hummus-lite.

That's a great point. To many, coarse=authentic=good.
Darn it all Rob, if we equate just any legume paste with peanut butter we'll regret the fallout.
