As we've noted here on Ricochet many a time and oft, liberals are certain--really certain--that they're smarter than everybody else. Writing in the current New Yorker, as I noted in an earlier post, Hendrik Hertzberg came right out and asserted it. "[P]art of the problem [part of the reason, that is, why the voters chose to punish the Democrats]...is public ignorance."

The American people, knuckle-dragging troglodytes.

Hold that thought while you turn to the front page of yesterday's New York Times, where you'll find this headline: "Obama's Economic View Is Rejected on World Stage, China, Britain and Germany Challenge U.S.--Trade Talks with Seoul Fail, Too." Now turn to "U.S. Gets Rebuffed at Divided Summit" in today's Wall Street Journal:

The Group of 20 nations...concluded its latest meeting here with only a narrow procedural accord, as the U.S. was unable to persuade other countries to take measures it believes are necessary to end currency wars and promote sustainable growth....China and Germany rejected U.S. calls to rein in their trade surpluses and bashed Federal Reserve policies that they said undermined the dollar.

Hm. Hu Jintao, whom New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman admires in print several times a month, and Angela Merkel, whose intelligence and shrewdness no one doubts, and, for that matter, Nobel Prize-winning economist Gary Becker, who said as much when I interviewed him for Uncommon Knowledge--all side against our enlightened, bien-pensant president, siding instead--can the conclusion be avoided?--with those knuckle-dragging troglodytes, the American people.

What I find confusing is how the electorate went from being so enlightened, according to the same media, just two years ago.

Peter Robinson

Ah, Mollie, 'tis a mystery indeed.

David Limbaugh

Yes, Peter and Mollie, here's an example: a piece by Lincoln Mitchell in the Huff Post, who was beside himself with glee right before Obama was elected about how O's election would prove (and signal to the rest of the world) that the American electorate had become "more progressive, enlightened and thoughtful."

Dear Peter,

Due to a hunting accident with a stone-tipped spear, a scar above my nose now keeps my eyebrow from growing back together. I am being shunned by my fellow knuckle draggers, in their full, unibrow glory. How can I return to those happy go lucky days of yore?

Signed,

Split-Brow Man

Despite Thomas Friedman's previous mashnotes, I'm willing to bet he's finding Chairman Hu a wee bit more trogolyditic these days.

Not to downplay the intelligence, erudition, and prudence of the American people, but it doesn't taken a genius to stand against economic policies that have been abject disasters every single time they've been tried.

I don't think so- because the high value exports Hu is so desperate to keep selling over here are windmills and other green energy gear. Green Virtue trumps economics on the Friedman Scale.
