It's inevitable, tonight, that the 47% will be mentioned.

Here's what I'd say:

"Mr. President, that 47% of the country that doesn't pay taxes?  That's a national disgrace.  It's a disgrace that 47% of us aren't making enough money to pay even a small amount.  But that's on you, sir.  With joblessness higher than it's ever been, the economy sputtering, and federal spending out of control, no wonder there are so many people struggling to get by.  What I don't understand is, why you think I should be the one apologizing.  This is on you, Mr. President.  And you should be ashamed."

Or, you know, you could just repeat what the smartest and most adroit political mastermind alive said yesterday: (Huge H/T to the great Jim Treacher)

Hahahaha!  I don't blame Clinton and Biden for accidentally making the case for Romney.  It's hard not to.

If you can, you may want to download the first hour of Hugh Hewitt's show from yesterday.  Paul Ryan was on, and he made it pretty clear that Romney is armed and huntin' for bear.

He has been there and done that:

Sept 18,2012, In a Fox interview:

"I do believe that we should have enough jobs and enough take-home pay such that people have the privilege of higher incomes that allow them to be paying taxes," Romney said Tuesday. "I think people would like to be paying taxes."

My response:

"47% pay no income tax?  Good.  Before 1894 the other 53% didn't have to pay it either.  Let's go back to that."

That's probably why I'll never be elected to anything....

Wouldn't that be great?  In another world, perhaps.  With another candidate.

When I hear Rob Long's voice delivering that perfect line in my head, it sounds devastating.  When I hear it in Mitt Romney's voice...it's somehow not quite so devastating.

Delivery, delivery, delivery.  Can he do it?  I feel like a parent going to my child's first school play.  I just hope he doesn't get jittery and forget the lines we practiced all week.

You're dreaming. Romney will rope a dope the response as usual and fail to deliver any knock out punches.

I love that video game jargon has found its way into Rob Long's lexicon.

Can we expect any pwnage on Sullivan and Son?

It's not the 47% "pay no taxes", its "pay no income taxes". Those that are employed pay FICA taxes, those that drive pay fuel taxes, etc. you know the drill. Don't make it easy for a fact checker to throw everything out because someone lied about "paying NO taxes"..

...and then the President would say:

"Well, Mr. Romney, you could easily reduce that 47% number by eliminating the two main drivers of it: the child tax credit and the home interest deduction. Those two policies brought that percentage up from the 20's to the 40's, and they've been championed by conservatives. In fact, your opponent in the primary, Rick Santorum, wished to triple the child credit, which would easily have brought that number above 50%. Now I happen to like policies like that. You don't? You think the working class families who take advantage of those breaks are somehow moochers, as you suggest in that video? Or is it retired Americans, those who no longer pay income taxes but who did for a lifetime, that you resent?" Etc.

That word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

Seriously, though, Obama didn't get off any of his obvious hits. No Bain, no taxes, no 47%. Given that the next debate will cover abortion, it's going to look a lot nastier. With a bit of luck, Obama's going to try way too hard. On the other hand, he's definitely going to be getting a better night's sleep before the next time.

I know!  Weird, right?

But when you're putting your hopes on the second debate, you're in trouble.

Better still, the debate next time is a domestic/ foreign policy mix and is going to have to cover the social issues. Obama's going to have 30 minutes, of which maybe 13 are him speaking, to get in all his non-foreign lines.
