Having known a few real Baptists, I am amazed that there is not an automatic counter-demonstration everywhere the Phelps MAFIA goes. Including the little boys' room. After all, they have a stake in how the name is used.

I wonder why there aren't groups of big rigs and RVs getting lost in the neighborhood of the Westboro Baptist protests and stopping to ask for directions over and over again in between the protesters and the object of their protests. I imagine it could take ten or twelve hours for every one of the large vehicles to make their way through the area.

By the way, I saw Ms. Phelps interviewed by Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday. He asked why she had said that the 9-year-old killed in Tucson was "better off dead" and how an innocent child figured into her church's thinking. She opined that "no human being is innocent" and all are bound for Hell if they do not produce "fruits" that are "meat for redemption."
What confuses me is that anyone following that doctrine would oppose abortion. Surely unborn children bear mortal sin from conception, and just as surely they haven't produced any fruits to earn redemption. Thus the massive number of abortions in the USA must be God's will, according to Phelps logic, because God wants lots of unborn babies to die... as punishment for America's tolerance of the killing of unborn babies.
Not that logic enters into the equation when one talks about the Westboro cultists.

Sisyphus points out the unobvious, but true. As a Baptist, I am not allowed to behave in an adult fashion in other than, erm, Missionary Attitude, because we all know that doing that, standing up, might lead to dancing.
However, I also reject the Westeboro part of their name, as there are probably fine folks in Westboro. I just call them Phelpsians and encourage others to do the same; they are a cult organized around Phelps.
Baptists are amongst the many in the Patriot Guard and Gathering of Eagles that organize to shelter families from the Phelpsians.
