Peter, you're breaking my heart all over again. "President Daniels" would have been the finest two-word phrase in the English language (I would have eagerly voted for Governor Barbour as well).

You're telling me. And they say politicians don't look so good up close. But I've known both men for a quarter of a century, and they're two of the finest men, and best of friends, I've ever known.

It is a testament to the character of both men that they chose the private life with family over the power of the Presidency. Not that you have to be a bad person to become President, but when you are being pushed as hard as these two men were to run it takes character to say no.

I am inclined to be understanding. But, at a time when the republic is in genuine danger, I am not sure that I would praise the character of anyone who, for any reason, shirks his duty. If these two Governors are as good as they seem to be, they have a duty to run. This is no ordinary time, and they both know it.

I am torn, I have to say, between respect and frustration with both men. I admire the motivations they seem to have had in backing away from the race and I like the Cincinnatus-style way they seem to be content to till their own fields.
HOWEVER, Cincinnatus if you'll remember returned to his fields after the peril to Rome was vanquished. Not before.

I totally agree, Professor. We have hundreds of thousands of fine Americans putting their lives and family time on the line to serve in our military. One would have hoped the Governors could have demonstrated that level of commitment to country.

I know I am biting off way more than I can chew debating both Professor Rahe and Kenneth, but please remember that both men have served two terms as governors and many years in various administrations. Governor Barbour was the RNC Chairmen and a member of the Reagan administration. Governor Daniels worked for Senator Lugar, President Reagan, and President George W Bush.
Both men have served our Republic for the better part of his life. I think we can thank them and appreciate the decision to step out of the public spotlight.
But still, oh for a Daniels presidency.
