How Gay Is Ken Mehlman?
The former chairman of the Republican National Committee is so gay, he needed more than four decades to figure it out!
“It’s taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life,” said Mehlman.
Mehlman's debut as the Most Powerful Gay Republican Ever instantly became the top item on the blog aggregator Memeorandum, meaning that everybody on the Internet who has an opinion -- which is to say, everybody on the Internet, period -- felt compelled to blog about it. While this gave me the opportunity to vent my spleen about Mehlman's misguided stewardship of the RNC, the editors of the New York Times evidently assigned the story to their Department of Awkward Headlines:
Wise readers immediately recognize the implied liberal-bias subtext: "Yes, he says he is gay, but he's a Republican, and you know how those Republicans constantly lie about everything."
GOPophobia is much in the news lately. FreedomWorks, a major supporter of the Tea Party movement, is now getting telephone death threats.
Do the callers hate freedom? Or is it the "work" part they hate?

Re: How Gay Is Ken Mehlman?
As the guy who did the Ted Kennedy impression on the Imus show once warbled "happy days are here again, a Republican is queer again..."
Didn't we all know (well those of us who actually recognized the name) that he was gay? Not as if he's tapping his shoes in public restrooms. It's his own bidness.
Next, Mehlman will reveal he's black. But oh no, he's not allowed to be really black.

Re: How Gay Is Ken Mehlman?
As @keder observed yesterday: "Ken Mehlman is gay? Big Whoop."
I tried to read the story but I got bored halfway through. I think your take RSM is the most interesting one: Isn't it curious/amusing how much the left seems to care more than the right?

Re: How Gay Is Ken Mehlman?
I resent the constant rehearsal of the meme that the Republicans are continuously engaged in "anti-gay" activities and policies.
It is perfectly possible to understand that SSA has a definite in-bred component, that whether a person is gay or straight has nothing inherent to do with her/his/hs goodness or value as a human being, that there is no important reason to ban them from military service, to support some form of civil unions, and still oppose changing 100,000 years of marriage history.
Yet, that is consciously defined by activists as being "anti-gay".
I'm sorry, I have a lot of trouble equating the appalling evil of slavery based on skin color with denial of the right to refer to a civil union as "marriage". As Shelby Steele said, this is about the self-esteem of a sense of "ordinariness", not enslavement.
It is completely unsurprising that Ken Mehlman will continue to follow his historic ideological roots and continue to be welcome among Republicans. Good for him. But he should have the right to decide personally whether and when to disclose the details of his love life, not some politically-driven "outing" slimeball.

Re: How Gay Is Ken Mehlman?
That is the oddest headline in the short history of Ricochet. Is there a degree-scale of gayness? "Ken Mehlman reveals he's gay - but only on weekends."
It's like Bill Clinton qualifying to be black but Clarence Thomas doesn't.
