With all of the talk these last few months of Charles Murray and his book (I'm a 45 by the way), I thought of a different experiment.

How much of the US have you actually seen?  How many states have you visited (exluding layovers).  I'm talking about states where you at least spent an overnight.  I'll toss in Canadian provinces too for fun.

My sister has been to all 50, my wife just a few.

So, where do you go?  How much of America have you really seen?

That's really interesting--I didn't realize to what extent the charge that I ignored the flyover states was true.  (I know we drove across the country when I was a kid,  but I was too young to remember it, so it doesn't count.)

Claire -- Could it possibly be true that you've never been to Massachusetts? Do you know there are more bookstores per capita in Cambridge than anywhere else on the planet?  You need to get a speaking gig at Mount Holyoke!

No particular pattern to this—it's largely a matter of where conferences have been held which I've attended.

For me, this is dominated by the locations of solar eclipses (1999, 2001, 2008, and 2010).

If you can drive in England and know where to get good sushi in Istanbul, you get a free pass.

If I could claim every state I've visited, even for half a day, I'd name all but Hawaii and Louisiana, both of which I've sort of been saving.  But I'm being a good boy, observing the you-must-have-spent-at-least-one-night-in-the-state-to-claim-it rule.

As for Canada--well, my apologies.

Wow.  Traveling the world to see solar eclipses.  Really cool.

A mere 30 if you can only count overnighters. How disappointing. Add five more if you count driving through them.

Hey, this world map one is cool!  I don't look nearly so well travelled there though.

I recognize this is only states, but I am surprised they ignored the District of Columbia.  As for Canada, even being from Alaska I never made it to a Canadian province.

Have to agree - long-term world travel kind of skews the survey though.

Oh, I should probably include Ontario where I've been a few times.

Oops, I didn't see the rule about having had to spend a night. I never spent a night in Wyoming, Iowa, Indiana, or Ohio.  Drove through them via I-80 on my way to New Hampshire from California.  On the cross country drive, I spent the first night in Utah, the second night in Nebraska, and arrived the third night in New Hampshire.

49 - Number of states I've visited (never been to Maine)

56 - Number of Obama states I've visited (I'm assuming I've been to the additional seven)

9 - Number of states I've lived in (Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, New York, Connecticut, Florida, Washington, California, Hawaii)

3 - Number of Canadian provinces I've visited - need to work on this

33 - Number of countries visited

2 - Number of countries lived in (US, Bahrain)

7 - Number of times driven coast to coast

If I'm in Ohio this fall, I hope to visit Chicago, and will almost certainly spend a bunch of time seeing friends in Grand Rapids and Detroit. If I sneak in trips to see govs. Daniels and Walker speak, that'd clean up the most embarrassing white portion of the map nicely.

I can't believe I am the only one so far who has been in all of the lower 48. Where's Dave?

Edit: Same result using the overnight rule.

What a great idea for a post!

This is using an extremely rigid definition of the must-stay-one-night rule.  Otherwise, I'd add Arkansas, Indiana, and Kansas.

I've also been to four Canadian provinces (BC, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick).

I've driven through 44 of the lower 48, but have "spent the day" in only these few.

I've been to 47/50 - only missing Alaska, Hawaii & Vermont.  But I've been stuck on that number for about 6 years now.

For Canadian provinces, I'm missing Newfoundland, Saskatchewan and the 3 territories.  Grew up in British Columbia.
