With all of the talk these last few months of Charles Murray and his book (I'm a 45 by the way), I thought of a different experiment.

How much of the US have you actually seen?  How many states have you visited (exluding layovers).  I'm talking about states where you at least spent an overnight.  I'll toss in Canadian provinces too for fun.

My sister has been to all 50, my wife just a few.

So, where do you go?  How much of America have you really seen?

42 states- I've missed the NE (Maine, NH, VT, RI), Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, and West Virginia.  Been through WVA about 10 times, but never stayed overnight.

And I've only overnighted in two provinces that I recall.  Canada has only been habitable since Harper's arrival....

Looking at Troy's map, all I can suggest is that even at his tender age he intuited how to avoid accidentally stumbling into me.

I seem to have visited mostly liberal-dominated States - well, mostly my travels within the US have to do with either conferences or flying and gliding as hobbies.

I need the Dakotas and Wyoming.

Sorry.  Had to pick some minimum threshold.  If we could layovers, I could have checked off Georgia years sooner.  Been stuck in Atlanta airport a few times.

What a great idea for a post!

This is using anextremelyrigid definition of the must-stay-one-night rule.  Otherwise, I'd add Arkansas, Indiana, and Kansas.

I've also been to four Canadian provinces (BC, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick). · 18 minutes ago

I should add, where is Rob Long on this?  I'd guess he'd have all 50 pegged easy.

Just draw a line along the Mississippi from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean.  Everything west I've seen (except Hawaii), everything east I haven't.

I used to travel a lot for work.  Those of you who haven't been to the Black Hills of South Dakota - Home of Mt Rushmore - are really missing out.  Also, Prince Edward island is kind of hard to get to.

Seems as though I am not doing a very good job with the northwest and northeast. Not sure what's going on in the Carolina's. This will be rectified. Also been to Ontario.

I'm a 61 on the Murray scale, and even better on the USA scale. I've been to all the states except Alaska, Hawaii, North Dakota, Idaho (I think), Delaware, and New Jersey. I have not spent the night in all the rest, but have driven through them, and mostly not just a corner. We live in a beautiful (and big!) country!

My family went on a lot of car trips when I was young.  The longest one was driving from Guatemala to Missouri then to New York and back to California.  That was  a long, hot summer.

Not much of a world traveller - but that will change when the wife and I are empty nesters in 5 years.

I've been to 29 states and 3 provinces so far (including living in NY, NH, MA, VA, IL, and NJ).  I have hit almost everything East of the Mississippi.  My big hole is the mountain west and the southwest.

I've missed a few states - the Dakotas, Indiana and Oregon.  Oregon surprises me as I've had business there, but I've never visited.

Hmm, when I picked random colors South Dakota wound up white but I've spent time in Rapid City and Sioux Falls.  Strangely, I've made the two outlying states through service in Vietnam, Alaska going there and Hawaii on R&R from there.

I've lived in 11 states.  Most of this gypsy existence has been the result of being a technology consultant about 30 years.  I've had gigs in states where I flew in so frequently it felt like I lived there.

Have made 5 provinces in Canada and lived for a year in Mexico City doing a consult.
