At some point, reading--or writing--analyses of news from this region seems like such an empty exercise.

I miss you, Judith, and I hope you're okay.

Any chance of them flying south to hit Sadr City ? Could we hire them to do ?

I suspect Claire is referring to this:

Why?  You're good at it, it's essential material, and at the very least you have an attentive audience here.  Keep it coming.

Apparently, the site liked this comment so much it posted it four times.  I'll clean it up.

Claire, I'm fine, but upset and disheartened. And very tired -- somehow I'm finding it especially difficult in this instance to go through all the gruesome details and compose a dispassionate post about it. The sheer familiarity of the events is so horribly depressing.

For those who don't know yet, seven were killed and dozens injured in the south of Israel today in a series of terror attacks that took place over a period of eight hours.

I had no idea anything had happened until this evening, when I checked my email and found an emergency message waiting for me from the US embassy in Tel Aviv. (I've been running after my kids all day -- camp is over but school hasn't started yet -- and hadn't had any time to check the news.)

I'll post a timeline of the events. I know exactly how you feel, Claire: I feel such a weight of hopelessness on me right now that I can't muster anything in the way of analysis. It feels, at this particular moment anyway, like a pointless exercise.

Judith: Glad you and yours are safe. Perhaps in this case dispassionate is overrated. Perhaps a post dripping with anger and frustration and hopelessness is appropriate.

May the wounded be healed and the mourners be comforted.

So far the "Arab Spring" is starting out as bad as conservatives had feared...
