The NDP Headquarters is on fire in downtown Cairo. Watch history here.

My God.

Hosni might have to fire up that escape jet one of these days...soon. I hope he's got all his bank account records handy....

Egyptians, etc have now seen democracy in action in Iraq and they want it too.  Thanks Dubya.

If some of this results in the arrival of democracy in the arab world, what clearer proof do we need that the deaths of all those service men and women these last years where not in vain?  God let it be so.

Refresh memories as to who the NDP are?  I assume National Democratic Party (not the Canadians), which sounds like the good guys, but labels are often misleading.

If it is the good guys, who torched the joint?

Diane Ellis, Ed.

Matthew Shaffer over at NRO is writing timely updates of the situation, which you can find here.

Very concerned about violence in Egypt - government must respect the rights of the Egyptian people & turn on social networking and internet. - Robert Gibbs

I know its a tweet, but I would have expected something about not killing innocent civilians first.

What are the chances the military will take over?  If there is no ready means for a transfer of power --i.e. an election-- and if the Muslim Brotherhood or some such outfit is poised to hijack the situation, what alternative is left?

Unconfirmed reports that the Army & Police are clashing in Cairo? Wow.

Is Mubarak still expected to speak?

Claire Berlinski, Ed.

Joshua Trevino correctly notes: We're watching the revolution on Al Jazeera because every other news network has been slashing foreign bureaus for the past decade.

No one has heard from Mubarak yet. What could he say?

Simply amazing to watch all of this unfold. I'm reading quite a bit of talking head commentary on what the United States should do now or should have done in the past. It's interesting enough to read, but I'm reminded of a line from Babylon 5:

"The avalanche has already started, it is too late for the pebbles to vote."

(If Jonah is allowed to throw down Star Trek references, I can be permitted to inject a B5 reference now and again.)

I'm trying to think of an instance when the overthrow of an authoritarian regime by civil unrest has been followed by democracy.  Other than the American Revolution and Poland, nothing comes to mind.

But the examples of Iran, France and the Bolshevik Revolution are daunting.
